A long long way....

I just recently read on the OFSC website (but can't seem to find it now :? ) that a precedent was set in Ontario court when a charge of reckless driving for crossing open water was upheld. :shock: something about it not being designed for water in the first place and the risk that a ski could catch on the ice edge causing loss of control of the vehicle....
 
Once a sled has been in the water, it is never the same.
 
In NH, its going to be illegal

New Hampshire is in the process of passing a law to make "skimming" illegal after 1/1/05, except at permitted events. Here is the text of that law:

SB 346 - AS AMENDED BY THE SENATE

02/05/04 - 2004 SESSION

AN ACT relative to prohibiting the operation of snowmobiles on open water.

SPONSORS: Sen. Flanders, Dist 7; Sen. Odell, Dist 8; Sen. Johnson, Dist 2; Rep. Royce, Ches 28

COMMITTEE: Wildlife and Recreation

ANALYSIS

This bill prohibits the operation of a snowmobile on open water, also known as "skimming."

This bill is a request of the fish and game department.

Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:

1 New Section; Snowmobile Operation on Open Water Prohibited. Amend RSA 215-A by inserting after section 5-a the following new section:

215-A:5-b Operation on Open Water Prohibited. No person shall knowingly operate a snow traveling vehicle on open water, also known as skimming. For the purpose of this section, "open water" means any area of an inland water body that is free of ice and snow. This section shall not apply to events as permitted pursuant to RSA 215-A:30.

2 Effective Date. This act shall take effect January 1, 2005.
