I was putting a new track on my 2006 Apex ER today. When I had the job just about complete i noticed a small spring under the snowmobile on the garage floor right where I was working on it. It was on the side under the Chain case and all the Reverse linkage. The spring was a little spring juat about like you would find in a ball point pen. Could this spring have come out of any of the componets I was working on or was it just a coincidence it had been on my garage floor for a time? Anybody have any thoughts on this?

It goes in between the idler gears (not sure this what they call them, hope you know which ones i mean), there is a small hole in each of them and that little spring goes in there. I think someone said it is to keep them quiet, so not sure how critical, but I would put it in if it was mine.

Yup. that's it, heres a pic. It goes between parts 63 and 66. There will be a hole in each part, the spring goes in the hole on both gears. There won't be any compresion load on the spring, it's loaded torsionally (well in a way). It's more of a bending load. It just keeps the gears from banging.

Looks like the pic won't load, go to the fiche on Yamaha and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Call me if you need help Gordon. I know exactly the spring you are talking about.

Exactly, it just sits in the small gear.

To help it stay in place better wheile re-assembling, just put some oil in the hole, and the spring will sit better.

LOL...I wondered where that went when I changed a track last year on an RX1...I figured that's where it went, but didn't know why. I think it is the KEY COMPONENT in the drivetrain. Any slight misalignment can cause a blown chaincase.
Or a pen that won't retract....lol.
