Guys - wondering about some things and wanted to see if anyone has advice. Going to do an oil change on the 2005 Rage and give it a little face lift this year. Just ordered C&A Razors and am going to install 108 studs down the center, put on a 2" riser, new windshield, Rox handguards, some other minor things. My questions are - should I run a K&N filter or just go stock? What synthetic oil should I run? Does the sled have tunnel protectors standard or do I need to buy and install them (sled is at my place in MI so I can't go look at it)? Should I just run the stock NGK's or do the Bosch or other fancy plugs make any sort of real difference? Any advice you have is appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Here's my answer

No on the K&N run stock the performance you would gain would be minimal, Use Amsoil 0W-40 Powersports Oil, but I'm biased as I am a dealer. Make sure you use a high quality oil filter! You can buy WIX filters direct from a Amsoil dealer. The sled should have tunnel protectors on it already. As for the Plugs I tried the NGK CR10EK's but my sled didn't like them so run the stock. Again you can buy NGK plugs right from an AMSOIL dealer too. You may want to try the Holtzman carb springs. They seem to give you a little boost in perfomance and are fairly inexpensive.

Good luck and have fun. The 120's are great sleds

Don't mess with the air box on the Genesis 120. This has been kicked around a lot on this forum in the last few years, and altering the intake flow by changing the box design or eliminating it will hurt the performance dramatically. The stock flow is right for this 3 cylinder motor.

The oil thing has been debated also. Originally Yamaha stated to use the recommended oil only and to stay away from fully synthetic due to starter clutches. I'm sure there are folks that have had great luck with the oil of their choice, but this engine will outlast the chassis by far no matter what oil you use within reason. I have stayed with the original type oil. Just my choice.

I agree with Poke on the plugs. I have tried different plugs and have had the best luck with the original type plugs as far as performance and cold starting.

Not sure about the 05, but my 08 Vec LTX has tunnel protectors, however, not enought to protect the rear heat exchanger. A couple hard bottoms last seasons resulted in scars on the fins from 1.375 studs. My simple solution was to rivet a couple pieces of hyfax on top of the aluminum protectors over the heat exchanger.

I like the Yamaha recommended oil and filter. Cheap and easy to get at my local dealer (I am also an AMSOIL dealer, for my own purposes). Also running the stock plugs.

Have fun!!

Ditto on the riveted hyfax onto current protectors, we did the same thing after our sleds all got gouges on rear exchangers. Studs could get close or knick the exhaust if track is run loose. plowking
