I was installing my battery tender and had the airbox off. I noticed a lot of oil all around and determined it came from the airbox. I opened it up and clenaed it out. I've searched on the forums and found out that it's an oil/air seperator in there, and I'm guessing that's where a good part of it was from. Just dripping/leaking out of it.
But there was also a lot of it in the airbox. The filter was somewhat soaked in the lower 1/2. Is some oil in the airbox normal for these sleds?
Things that were weird...
- The vent hose in the airbox had a crack in it. I put some adhesive lined shrink wrap over it to fix it up. I don't think it was leaking from the crack. But wasn't going to put it back together "broken".
- The airbox drainage/vent hose (not one of the two for the oil) wasn't straight, it was caught up on something and hence crimped shut. When I put the airbox on I made sure it had a straight drop. This might be why oil was building up in the airbox, but doesn't explain why there was so much to start...
- The oil was a bit low, down to the "E" mark when measured without screwing the dipstick back in.

Steve, The slice in the hose is suppose to be there but the oil should not. Only water should be making it out of the seperator in any quanity. Don't know enough about why to give you a answer.

Thanks!
Really? Ok, that makes sense. It looked too perfect. Any idea why it's there? I'll go take my "fix" off of it. There was also a hole in the end near where it vented.

The slice is there in-case the end of the hose becomes blocked. The whole purpose of the hose is to vent the crankcase. On my Rage I have the slice and some punched holes.

Thanks for the info!
I've cleaned up the airbox, I'll keep an eye on it. See if it happens again, and if so hit the dealer.

That slice was put in there in the 04 4 strokes. Many 03 guys also made this mod. In very very cold weather the breathers were freezing up causing big oil loss.
Yeah that breather is a bit like an oil circulater LOL. Make sure you dont overfill your oil and that should help keep it to a minimum

Doesn't have anything to do with that letter and sticker that the factory just sent does it? The letter describes oil loss due to misrouted or blocked vent hoses due to incorrect air box installation.

I don't think so. The two oil hoses were on there OK. It was the water drain that appeared kinked.
We'll see how it goes. I've double checked things over and unless there is a plug in the hose leading down to the sump it should all be as intended.

I checked it after another 250mi of riding (575 on the sled total). There was some oil, but not much.

if you pull the hose off the side of the airbox when it runs it will pump some oil out. i can see why routing is important. it dont take long to pump out a cup full. mine was overfull and i think that was part of the reason with oil in airbox.
