1: Acquire the exhaust, I used a 2005 R1 left side*
*I bought a used one off ebay for $40 shipped. The seller didn't mention the end was covered in road rash so he refunded me $20. I can live with the scar, it gives it a WTF did you do to accomplish that look. I have seen the 2007 model year mentioned. I bought one. It will work the same way but the end is slant cut. When mounted the bottom of the pipe sticks out further that top. It slants back instead of forwards. If it were to rain your pipe would fill with water. Well, not much but it looks upside down.
2. Cut off stock exhaust
* I started at the stock exhaust, moving up the pipe toward the front of the sled a went PAST the 1st bend, as soon as the bend was finished that's where I cut. I used a hacksaw, i was easy for 3/4 of the pipe. The last 1/4 i reverted to old school lumberjack bare blade and leather gloves. The pipe is a little over 1-3/4", sand it smooth and shiny and get the rust off. This is important as the R1 version of 1-3/4" is not the same as the phazer version of 1-3/4"
3. Prepare R1 exhaust
* I took off the heat shield and painted it red. Hopefully it will lend credibility if I should ever have to defend the odd looking pipe at a check point. I cut off the hangers that weren't used by the heat shield. One big one points straight down, another out the right side. I cut off with my hack saw then smoothed out quickly on the bench grinder. The end of the pipe is flared and has a mesh insert. Pull that out, it will never fit over your sleds exhaust pipe. Hopefully you got the super duty stock exhaust clamp.
4. Install the hanger strap
*330mm is the length you need to find. I had to get one off of ebay from the UK. 18gbp shipped if you go through ebay, 14gbp if you email him and use paypal. It showed up in about a week. Faster customs than shipping to Canada. STEPHEN WATSON, bikeboost@w3z.co.uk
*the 2007 pipe is 360mm, I have one available cheap$$ The strap goes on the back of the pipe, push it on till it hits the heat shield mount tab.
5. Make your bracket
* The hanger needs to bolt to something. I used a 1.5"x1.5" aluminum angle, 3" long. I drilled a hole in the middle of one leg toward the end. I used the rubber cushion that came with the strap as a bushing between the strap and the angle on each side when i bolt it all together. Bolt the bracket onto the hanger finger tight.
6. Install the exhaust onto the pipe.
* It's tight. Have the pipe clean and a little squirt of lube helps. You need to push it on past the slots cut into the expanded portion of the exhaust pipe. It was hard before I cleaned it up, easy when it was smooth and lubed. Don't forget to put the clamp on before this, leave the bolt as loose as possible. Position the pipe so it looks level with the tunnel. Adjust hanger strap so bracket falls under the plate welded to the seat frame that the stock exhaust hanger once bolted through.
7. Drill mounting holes.
* I did this with the alum. angle bolted to the pipe. I went slow and drilled through both pieces at once. It saved trying to line up holes if they were pre drilled into angle. You can see the bolt heads in some pictures.
8. Finish up.
* Tighten up all the bolts. Run it and check for leaks. Put all the plastics / seat back on. Wait for snow and curse me out should it all fall off in the middle of the woods cause I haven't tested it out either.
Parts:
Yamaha R1 2005 exhaust left side $40

Thanks
At idle it sounds about the same. Maybe a little deeper tone but not louder.
