A friend has a '04 rx-1 and was going to get his rear shock rebuilt along with my rtx shock. pioneer perf. said it's not rebuildable.
what options are available to replace the shock?? i think an oem shock is around $275, is there aftermarket shocks worth replacing it with, or should he spend the extra for ohlin shock? he doesn't really want to buy a used one since you never really know how good it is.
he plans on getting an Apex this yr. & maybe keeping the rx1 as a backup, so I am not sure if he wants to put in an expensive shock.
whats your thoughts?
thanks

Ba, Many people back in 03 did not like the stock shock that came with the RX-1, In 02 the viper came with an adjustable rear shock that yamaha had vavled teriable. The dealer took them back and sold a brand new rebuildable. The turned in shocks were used by many people on this site. I found one for cheap. not sure if any dealer would still have one or not? I and many here had the viper shock revavled at pioneer, best thing I ever did was chage to this new shock. I think the revavle and recharge was like fifty bucks. Good luck Honk

Years ago I bought a Kayaba shock from Pioneer performance. Was adjustable, rebuildable, rode better and I believe it sold for about $369. Hope this helps.

For $250-$300 you can get a Cat or Doo complete skid, which will improve the ride better than any replacement shock (even Ohlins) and it will improve the handling too.
The swap is a little bit of work, but not that hard.

I put a revalved Viper rear shock and had the center RX1 shock revalved by Pioneer. This was the best Proaction ride I have ever had. Handle the bumps better than any Viper I ever rode.
