Last weekend they had snowmobile demo rides at CruiseFest in Minocqua, WI.
I attended again this year and I rode an '06 Apex ER. I would have liked to try out a Nytro, but they were only allow 1 ride per day, so I figured Id go with an Apex.
I LOVED the Apex!
It is the best snowmobile I have EVER ridden. I have never felt more in control and comfortable on any sled, PERIOD.
The Apex has a totally different feel from the RX-1. Where the RX almost felt out of control at times, the Apex never felt like that. We were riding on some pretty bumpy trails at speeds ranging from 50-80 mph and at no time did I feel uncomfortable, afraid or that I was pushing it beyond the sled's limits. I did have the sled lift the inside ski on me once or twice, but it was always very managable. Like I said, we were trail riding at 80 mph on twisty trails, so I was tossing the sled into the corners with a lot of aggression.
I had no problems with the heated grips not getting warm. After a 4 mile demo ride the handlebars were nice 'n toasty and the thumbwarmer got so hot that I had to turn it almost off. (I was wearing a pair of lightweight "sno-x" gloves, so if I didnt get cold with those gloves you arent going to have cold hands)
I could tell a big difference in the engine too. The Apex feels almost like a 2-stroke. It doesnt have the 4-stroke lag in terms of throttle response that the RX had. The Apex is also much quieter, it doesnt have the constant crotchrocket "waa-waa" that the RX had. That was something I didnt like about the RX-1, but Yamaha fixed that on the Apex. I also LOVED the EFI. It was so nice to just turn the key at put your helmet, goggles and gloves on while the sled warmed up and not have to worry about using the choke or having the sled stall on you.
All in all, the Apex is a REALLY nice sled. All you folks who were whining about your Apex, you need a :ORC . If you think your Apex is such a POS, you dont know how good you have it.
