I have a 2009 RS Venture GT coming and will let you know more when I get to ride it especially after the break-in period.

I plan to use Yamalube 0W40 Full Synthetic throughout and will change the oil filter as prescribed in the owners manual which is 12,000 miles. Oil changes will occur at 3,000 mile intervals.

I am going to take my time with the sled and be patient with it as I determine the "sweet spot" or the best suspension set-up for my riding style.

I'll post my findings. ;)!

hondo, i know you put on more miles than anyone but why chance having a dirty filter and changin it so infrequently when your changing the oil regularly?

Hello Ragefarmer,

I recently have had lengthy discussions regarding this topic.

The reason why is: The oil systems on these motors are "over-built".

These motors and oil systems are made for motor cycles.

In the winter, we don't experience dirt, road grime, dust and basic summer conditions that motor cycles do experience.

Thus, an oil filter change is not necessary for 12,000 miles, as the book recommends.

The oil filter should be changed after the break-in period, which will be done. Then the 12,000 mile run will begin with regular oil changes at 3,000 mile intervals.

Bottom line: If a snowmobiler rides 3,000 miles or less each year, and uses Yamalube 0W40Full Synthetic, a sledder in this scenario would change oil only once a season.

The cost of oil would be less than $30.00 for three liters.

Pretty economical.

We are all looking for ways to reduce costs while maintaining our machines in top condition.

I am going to post my performance findings.

I want to show the "added economic value" of this procedure and also show the "bullet proof" reliablity of Yamaha motors.

This is the "Yamaha Advantage".

Hope this helps! ;)!

it should be very interesting, my dealer and most i talk to recommend changing the filter every year as well because the sled sits for eight months, even though the manual calls for 12 000 mile intervals.. so the cost to me was the same as riding a two stroke and buying oil, which i was disappointed with as i thought i could save money on oil with the 4 stroke

My 09 Venture GT is sitting in my garage. Slydog powderhounds with 8 inch Bergtrom triple points installed. Skisavers and shimmed in front . Setup Toed in 1/8 inch. Can hardly wait for snow. Studded with 114 up the middle. Sweet sled.

Ragefarmer,

You can save money. Don't change the filter until the 12,000 mile interval.

I really don't believe the Yamaha engineers would provide this recommendation if it wasn't a 100% validated. You can imagine how much over-build is built into the oil filter.

Ergo major savings ;)!

Hondo,
I was looking forward to your 50,000 mile report this season with your '05, and maybe seeing it at the Albany Yamaha show again this year. I purchased a leftover '05 Rage last season and only have 700 miles on it, so I know it's got 35,000 miles left on it. Thanks for your comments and congradulations on your new ride and hope you enjoy it. Fran :4STroke: :yam:

Thanks Frano,

Hope to see you in Albany.

Have fun with your Rage.

Have a great season and be safe. ;)!
