RX-1 W/ ZR SKID

I just finished putting a firecat skid into my old SX this summer. It is narrower than the stock skid, so I fabricated some brackets. Overall, not too hard to do. The track will line up with the drivers fine, I just made my own brackets and tunel extension. I could get some pictures after the weekend if you're interested.

Yes I am interested. Pictures would be great.

Here's some pics of the firecat suspension in the SX. I can try to get some better pics once I get the carbs and pipes back in the sled. I didn't want to move it much as I'm still in the finishing up my 'project'.

My Firecat skid is on the way. What did you use for spacers at the mounting points of the skid? How far back did you move the front mounting hole?

The rear spacers are 1"x3" steel, plus .25" aluminum next to the tunnel. I was able to use the rear suspension hole, and drilled one next to it to attach that bracket. All the forces are at somewhat of an angle now, so I wanted to make sure it would hold.

For the front, I don't have any measurements, but it is very close to being outside of the footwell. I'll try to get a better pic of that, it's hard to explain.

When putting the suspension in, I tried taking measurements from a firecat, but it didn't help much. There was too much to consider with the distance back and down relative to the tunnel and the ground. I lined it up by what looked good and just made sure it was square from there. If I had to do it all over again, I would be back 1-2" farther, but that's about it as I am almost to the limit of the adjustment for track tension. From the measurements I did get I was able to conclude that the suspension isn't under any compression while it's in the sled (the distance from hole to hole is the same installed or not).

I hope this helps. Let me know if there's anything I can do.

I would strongly suggest that anyone going with a Firecat skid check the rails very closely especially the 03 as they had an update due to weakness in the original rails.

I would also suggest that you add the GripnRip wheeel kit which adds a new solid aluminum billet axle and two outside wheels. The stock axle is a hollow piece of crap and in 05 Cat has gone back to outside wheels on the Firecats. The cost of the kit is $115 for the Outdoor shop. Well worth it.

I think it has more to do with the weight and the geometry of the skid. It transfers better and improves the attack angle.
