Here's the deal I washed my machine and when I went to take it off the trailer it started and ran great I let it heat up until the temp light went off then tried to reverse off the trailer and it would'nt take the gas it would backfire like 2 foot flames out the mufflers. I seems to me kind off like the TORS is still on Where do I look ? It is now in a heated garage but if it does it again I would like to know what or where to check?

Pull your plug caps off and give them a good cleaning/drying. If you got those wet while you were cleaning the sled (and you probably did) you could be arcing the ignition energy to the valve cover, giving you a misfire.

It would help to know what sled this problem is on, but if it's an RX-1 I know the TORS wires run right between the carbs and engine and have pin-style connectors with a greenish plastic covering. Unplug the TWO connectors and then plug the two coming from the harness (not the two going to the carbs) into each other to bypass the TORS.

So it is the same engine as mine. Here is a picture with the connector highlighted in case you can't find it.

Cool thanks for the picture this site is awesome or maybe its just that yamaha owners are always willing to help out. Anyway after sleeping in the heated garage all is well but if it happens again at least I know where to look. thanks again.

The suggestion to bypass TORS, I am sure was only intended to allow you to test to see if it is your problem. Once you have identified the problem, you need to remove the bypass.

Do you need instructions on properly adjusting the throttle cable to preclude TORS from activating? Typically TORS activates when the throttle cable is too tight. You need ~ 1/8" or slightly more gap between the throttle and it's mount. That is measured right where the cable passes through the mount to the throttle.

So the simpler thing to do is check your TORS adjustment. Once that is correct, try the sled. If you still have the same problem, then bypass the TORS to positively rule it out as the problem.

For reference since Len Todd suggested it, here are the instructions for adjusting the Throttle Free Play from the 03 RX-1 service manual:

I too experienced this problem. Flames and all, it was wild. My trouble however was in the throttle it self. I used a heat gun to melt the ice which built up there and then poured methanol hydrate over it. Was fine after that. Only time ever I left the cover off and it was freezing cold and that was the problem.
