LazyBastard: You are absolutely right; a jackshaft DOES distribute the loads better. However, the DD concentrates all of the forces on one side of the sled, and that seems to be its main advantage concerning weight (no jackshaft). So, all things being equal, if the DD can do it, a simple chaincase can be made to work in the same manner.
