i have an 08 phazer and i want to just add a peice of sheet metal to seal off the tunnel, what else would i need to do to make this reliable/safe??

The Yamaha & aftermarket tunnel closers are essentially just a sheet of aluminum and some rivets. Go for it.
I dont remember anyone having issues with just closing it off but the Yamaha kit has quite a bit of shielding that is added for heat protection also.

Its quite a bit more than just a sheet of aluminum (which is cut perfectly to fit). It comes with exhaust shielding, a big rubber gasket, rivets (borrow a pneumatic...trust me).
The whole kit was pretty cheap too. I think I paid under a 100.00 from Portal Yamaha. Looks factory.

There is a few of us where i work that have Phazes. All of us just cut aluminum and riveted it on. No issues. If you don`t have access to aluminum where you work, Home depot sells it, and can cut it for you.
You do not want to use a piece of Steel or Stainless sheet metal. the dis similiar metals will cause galvanic corrosion.

A 4x4 piece of 1/8th inch aluminum fell into the back of my truck while I was @ work one day.
Cut it to 11 1/4" X 26 1/2" I think (hard to tell now with everything back on but not real big) with a ban saw, cleaned up the edges.
Air rivet gun did make it easier as well.
I have the close off kit under the seat and tool box/ belt holder on there, can't even see it. Simple & cheap to do.

X3 I've installed the factory kit on 3 sleds. The make the sled exactly the same as the later models. They also make sure you can accidentally push the plastic side panels against the muffler if you lay the sled over.
