I did something simuliar to a motorcycle seat once (took some foam out) and I used a carving knife as well. I also had to use some sandpaper to get it perfect, if not once the material stretches tight over the foam you can see some of the imperfections in the cuts. I don't know if the cover in the sled show it, but it does on bikes. Just something to concider if you try this. Like I said, I don't know if it shows on a sled seat cover???

I got mine at a fabric store. Most carry a wide variety of it. I bought a 16 x 30 inch peice for $8.50. I even bought myself a new power staple gun and the whole project cost less than 40 bucks...!

It sits so high, you may need to wear platform shoes to touch the running boards.

No real noticable difference in seat riding height. Maybe an inch or so. You sort of sink into the seat..
2 points to make.
1. Unbeliveable difference in ride quality. IT ACTUALLY FEELS LIKE THERE IS A SUSPENSION ADDITION/ UPDATE. I know, I know but it does!!!
2. Much softer against the butt so the long rides have less numb butt.
