Just curious where most on here put the clip on their Mono shock/

I am hoping to send mine in soon for a rebuild/revalve and figured it would be a good time to change the clip position.

I believe I am on the bubble weight wise between the first and second clip so I am looking for pro's and con's of putting it in the second clip positon?

I weigh about 200-210 geared up and I like to ride somewhat aggressive, trail riding only.

Thanks ;)!

Irv, in the "Apex General Talk" Section...look for the FAQ's. You can find the clip setting charts by clicking on "Mono Shock Set-Up Charts".

I would put it on the second clip, then you have the 7 cam adjusts as well. I would put it on cam position 1 and stiffin the spring from there as necessary.

I took it in today and the shock rebuilder suggested I leave it on clip one.

Reading your post, I may re-call him and tell him to put it on the second clip like you suggest.

As far as sag goes, I could never get it right with this shock, that is another reason I took it in.

shock

When I rebuilt my mono shock I moved the clip to the third position..Thinking more is better...Not so...Ride was terrible...I had to move it back to the middle position...and cam at 3-4 position...I am 215lbs fully dressed I figured knocking on 240 lbs...Ride now is great...even when I have my saddle bags full of stuff...

Not sure what to do now?

I guess at this point I will just leave it in clip 1 and try it with the new rebuild/revalve?
If I don't see much of an improvement then I will go to the second clip.

I was hoping to hear from some peeps who switched from number 1 position to number 2 and what they thought of the change?
I am also curious what the shock builder (Peak Velocity) found, maybe it is something drastic and with the rebuild/revalve, it will be a night and day difference?

Have Pioneer Heavy Duty rear spring with shock revalve to match. Still have it on 2nd circlip and on cam 3, ride is perfect for my weight geared up at 260 lbs. I still would suggest 2nd circlip for you, cam 1 to start even with a revalve. The spring is for rider weight, and the stock spring is just too weak.

From what I understand, it was the 05 to 07's that had the weaker springs?
In 08 the spring was made a little thicker/stiffer? Correct me if I am wrong?

With that in mind, I am thinking maybe being on the first clip will be enough?

Good question about the spring for 08. Unfortunately, cannot find part numbers on the Yamaha site for the stock springs over different years. Yamaha does however offer six rear springs at different rates on their site. You may want to phone your Yamaha dealer and have them search the spring part numbers to see if they are the same from 06-08 and ask them if the rear spring rate was changed for 08 to make it stiffer.

Picked up my shock from Peak Velocity yesterday and was able to have a decent talk with the rebuilder.

He figures I will have no issues with my shock and all will be fine.

He use to race for Polaris and has tried many many different shock settings, valve stacks, oils, rebuilds etc.
He stated what he done to my shock he has done to lots of Yamaha shocks with nary a complaint, but if I am not happy with it for what ever reason, just bring it back and he'll fix me up.

;)!
