I am looking to upgrade from my 97 Vmax XT to an 06 Apex RTX. Just wondering if there is anything specific to watch out for with these Machines, and that year, other than what you can see with the Eye, as I am shopping.
Couple questions I have about the Apex in General
How are the Fox Floats on the RTX, are they good shocks? Any better than the stock, other than weight savings? Also I plan to long track it to a 144x1.5 or 1.75" track, maybe not this yr, but deff by next season. Can anyone let me know what you can safely run for Track lug height on these machines without hitting the Tunnel protectors.
were there any major changes in the Apex from 06 to say 09?
Thanks.

Of couse mileage and year is a factor, but much less with an apex...i am expecting 15,000 miles on my sled, as opposed to 7500 miles on my 2 strokes
Are the skis damaged, boby or a arms scratched or lugs broken off tghe track.... sign of a rougher type owner.
Is general maintenance items done..wheels spin correctly, has the carbides been changed to duallies, is the hyfax with reasonable wear left, is belt sitting correct height in secondary, is greasing been done at the zerks. If these things are good, the owner has probably maintained it well,
However, with an 06 I would ask if the donuts have been done, how old is the battery, has the drive bearing and jackshaft bearing been changed (or at least regreased), and when was the a
last time that the oil was changed, and oil filter changed.
The last 2 items are if the steering bushngs, and front a arm bushings have been replaced..with 06 they would need to be i suspect.
All of the above would affect the price.
If all of the above is done, you would have a pretty much mint sled, as the actual powerplant is bulletproof

I bought an apex....had to change the 2 Y pipes and 4 donuts,2006 came with titanium pipes and are likely to break if the clamps on the donuts become loose. If you hear any rattling sound under the tunnel, that maybe the problem and you"d be looking at a price tag of roughly $600 to $700 for this kind of job.
If you are mechanically inclined it is quite easy to do,just follow the instructions on here with a step by step instruction.
You will not regret buying an Apex...trust me.

I have that sled with over 10k miles as well as 11SE. Both great trail sleds. If still original you can plan on replacing radiator, the bracket breaks and oil resevoir will start leaking. 13mm bar and pilots for handling.....PP offset kit will eliminate hyfax issues

Lot's of little things as well. Like the fuel pump relay change in 07,etc. If you search here there is lot's of support for the machine.
Take your time and buy a low mileage stock machine. If you get one with alot of "Hot Rod" aftermarket stuff watch out.

Thanks Guys. I am somewhat Mechanically inclined, I can do most tasks, and do all the work on my Vmax, Changed track, gearing, tore apart the Clutches so I don't mind doing some wrenching, or changing bearings or anything like that.
Appreciate the info on what to watch for, and I know I'll love the Apex, missed out an amazing deal yesterday, but I'll keep shopping around. I typically like to keep my sleds pretty much stock, so I will deff be looking for one that is mainly stock and in great shape.

The 06 RTX (monoshock)has a different rear suspension than the 07-09 RTX's dual shock(Pro-a). Because your considering lengthening the skid in the future, I would look at later years that are the same basic skid as the current yammy long tracks XTX's.

I hear you, only reason I say 06 is budget, Looking for something around 5k...Would love an 08-09, but that puts me in the 6-7k range..
Found a nice 08 LTX, with Low K, trying to get a deal on it, but not sure he will let it go for what I am looking to pay...

I have a deal on 2 sleds, Likely picking one up this weekend, or possibly even tonight.
First is 2006 Apex Attack GT, 3500 KM Here is the list of Mods>
2006 Yamaha Apex GT black and silver, 136 inch Mountain Inc longtrack and rear radiator. Four-stroke, 4 cylinder EFI 150 hp, electric start and reverse, studded and fresh carbides. Electronic Ohlins adjustable rear suspension, GYTR adjustable front shocks, low and medium height windscreens, Sportech hand guards, fiberglas belly pan, 12 volt visor plug in, Yamaha factory cover, anti-ratchet sprockets. New slides and extra wheel kit, always Mobil 1 synthetic lubricants, new battery
Second one is 2006 RTX 8300 KM
Basically completely stock, but driven by an older guy, and really well taken care of, List of recent Maintenance included Battery, Exhaust Donuts, sliders, and so on.
I am leaning towards the APEX Attack GT, price is basically the same. Any opinions on one sled over the other?

For about the same money, I would likely go with the Attak.
The Ohlins is a great shock when it's working. I had an 07 and the shock needed service almost every off season.
Good luck with your decision. Post up pics when you bring one home!

Ended up getting the RTX, because the seller of the Attak wasn't willing to hold it for me, told me he had 2-3 guys interested and first come, I wasn't about to take a chance and drive almost 2 hrs and it end up that it wasn't there.
Picked up the RTX yesterday morning, I am cleaning it up, and will be doing some Fluid changes, greasing, and once its all back together I'll post up some pics. So far I am very happy!! Not sure it quite has the Power of my old 97 Vmax mind you....haha
