Simmons Flex Skis carbide question


I just took my 03 RX-1 for its first test ride after studding the new track. Last year I put in the 136 expert X and ran it with no studs for the few hundred miles I got in. I have the Simmons skis and can't recall what I have for runners, but I know I need more. I studded the full width of the track with 162 studs. I know when I got the Simmons skis I was advised to run different size carbides on the inside/outside. Any recommendations out there on what to run with the new set up? I know I'm going to need allot of carbide on the ice, just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks.
 
Bergsrome Triple Point 6" on the inside carbide, any basic carbide on the outside with 4". The inside carbide is the key as this is what enables the Simmons ski to turn. Even Scott Bergstrom says don't waste your money on expensive carbides for the outside of a Simmons ski.

When I ran Simmons on my RX-1, I could not tell a difference when running 4" or 6" on the outside carbide, except in my wallet.

I agree, but loose half of your studs, it will help with the push, and you don't need any on the outside edge of the track.
 
I've done more reading on the subject than I care to recall and some schools of thought say no outside studs make turning harder. I'm going to take my longer carbides, move them to the outside and put some big bergstroms on the inside and see how it goes before I start removing studs. Thanks for the input.
 
Studs make steering harder. PERIOD.
Remember that your track does NOT have just a single point of contact - in order for the sled to steer, the track has to slide across the ground a little. Studs nail the track down. The more they are, and the more spread out they are, the more leverage they have to reduce steering.
