I like the idea of countersinking the holes in the skid plate and using flat head fasteners to avoid snagging the bolt heads on rocks and such. However this will only work if you have a skid plate that has perfectly aligned holes.
My problem was that I had to enlarge my mounting holes in my skid plate to allow for proper alignment. This required washers on the bolt heads and made it impossible to use a flat headed fastener of the proper size.
