I also do it this way. Use water above freezing.
On the years I kept track caught around 80, gets to be a little like hunting.

Don't forget guys, rodent damage is normally covered by comprehensive insurance, I once put a clutch in a Ford truck that mice had built a nest in the Bell housing. Insurance covered the whole thing...

Here's a non lethal alternative:
Lasr winter I bought plug in emiters that you plug one in every outlet in the garage, all around the garage. I use 8 of them. They emit a sound in a pitch that mice can hear and it drives them away -- in fact will drive a lot of animals away (they can't stand the sound/ pitch apparently).
But they do work i believe. I've had them in use in the garage since winter now and since I've plugged them in out there, I've had zero mice in my traps w/ peanut butter i also have set out there in the garage. Before I'd get a mouse or two a week!
The down side is you don't want to use these if you have dogs nearby as it will drive them away also. But our dog is gone now so I use them and I've become a true believer in them!

i had an issue with mice at a house i used to live in. these mice refused to die, they would chew there limbs off if caught in a "snap trap", peel there fur off if caught on the "stick pads", and litteraly relocated roughly 100 or so decon pelets over night from under the kitchen sink, to the bathroom floor!
well i had enough, and the forced my hand!! i cornered a mouse one day and for the hell of it i pulled out my pocket knife and figured id take a whack at him. well sure enough i split the little bas@#$$ in half!! GAME ON!!! from that day on, i never set a single trap. i think my grand total was 12 or so with the same blade
of course karma is a B&*^!! and one day after another victorious kill, i was assembling a powerwheels (yamaha rapter, of course) for my son and like a fool, i was cutting towards myself. well im sure you can guess what happend next. yup, the blade jumped and slit the top of my hand open. oh did i mention i forgot to clean the blade after killing the mouse!? so 12 stitches and a tetness shot later i learned my lesson. never mix work with pleasure
