Make sure when you sell your sled to a private party other than a dealership you notify the secreatary of state or at least strip the reg sticker and trail permit off , I got a interesting call last night from the sheriff regarding a sled I sold in September and was never registered in the new owners name

The Sheriff also informed me that the SELLER has 15 days to report the sale to the SOS and that was news to me..

Right... I'd like to see them hold you to something like that. Just make sure you keep some kind of evidence of the sale.... "buyer pays $X for sled VIN xxxxxx as SCRAP. Buyer is responsible for everything, etc."

That's a great idea LB!

I've sold many sleds, vehicles etc and NEVER reported anything to the SOS. I think the Sheriff is full of BS. Just be sure to fill in the buyers info on the title/registration and write in the date when you sign off.

A few years back, a guy I know sold a Ditch Witch on a trailer (equipment and trailer probably 5000 lbs or so). On his way home, the new owner had the trailer come off the bumper hitch he was using "to get it home". The loose trailer broadsided a car causing a couple of pretty serious injuries. The lawsuit resulting from that ended up costing the guy selling the stuff about 50,000 in legal fees.....and the purchaser cancelled his check for the equipment, leaving this poor guy with a big ball of metal. The trailer and the machine were both totally destroyed. The guy that bought the machine said he had just borrowed it and there must have been something wrong with it for it to have come "undone" from his truck.

True story. Since it only takes a minute to have the buyer sign something simple saying he's taking possesion of whatever you're selling.... that's what I do, religously.

Always. I sold a car once, cops came back to me said they found it on the side of a road somewhere with some kind of crap along the lines of "its registered in your name, you're responsible for it". Guy I sold it to never bothered to register it. I gave them (cops) a copy of the proof of sale and never heard about it again. This was about 10 years ago, so at this point, no way I'll ever hear about it again.

I have a file in the cabinet just for bill of sales. Never know when it will come back to haunt you. My earliest dated bill of sale in there is 1998

Vin#, Date, Description and Signatures from buyer and seller. AS IS WHERE IS no matter what.

Those items takes all responsibility from you. I usually leave my insurance on the item also for a couple days.
