Have a 2003 RX-1 and we have had lots of new snow and I am having problem with airbox filling with snow and killing motor ?? It happened two days in a row after busting through lots of snow. Any idea what is causing this and what can be done to remedy ?

Tim..make sure your airbox is perfectly sealed to the carbs.Check the rubber boots. I have been busting thru huge powder & mine is fine.

I've got to figure out what's going on with mine too. In about 4 feet of fresh pow, the engine would only run up to 3/4 throttle or so.

Mike, it is snow that is dumping in by the oil resevoir and clutch. It is migrating under the air box and then being sucked up into the airbox, I am talking tons of snow that you have to scoop out of the airbox by hand to get it going again ?? It happens when you punch though 4-5 foot drifts and it is forced in on the air intakes on the top.

I was pushing through some very deep and light powder with no problems. From reading your post, you have an RX-1 or is it an RX-1 Mountain?

I had the same thing happen today .Very cold and fluffy snow . I checked the airbox over very closely . It looks like there is no way for the snow to get above the foam . Then I cheked the 2 pieces of foam in the slots at the side and they were about 1/4 in off the bottom . I added some foam to bottom will know tommorrow if this solves the problem . When i took off the airbox this is where the drift in the top was as well . I hope it works I don't like the snow in there at all .

I ran around Carmen and St. Cloud today and had big problems, taped up the intakes and it helped a bit but had to stop about 4-5 times to clean out airbox after running many miles in deep deep snow ! I think it is a combo of very fluffy snow and very very cold temps (-26c) as I had zero problems last year and ran lots of deep snow in Duck Mtn ? Regular RX-1 doen Mtn have a different airbox

Went out again today . still got some snow in . there was some ice infrount of the foam filter looks like it may be lifting the foam up and alowing snow to pass . going to put some tape on and see if this stops it

Rode in 3-5 foot of fluffy snow this weekend , snow pushing over the top of the hood and blowing into my face all day, have k/n's with pre filters and had no problems at all. Did notice snow pileing up in front of bulkhead and no where else maybe thats where you are sucking up the fine mist.

Had a problem like this this weekend. It ran crisp and good till I got to our 6000' riding area, with about 1 1/2 of fresh powder. After I would stop and let it idle for a while or shut it down for a few minutes It developed a bad bog when starting it and for the first 20' or so before it would "clean out".It was also hard to get the revs over 9400.I don't know what was going on this time cause i've ridden there before and at higher elevations with no problems.I have stock airbox and jetting,it almost seemed as though there was snow plugging the airbox or getting sucked through carbs.I see some people on here are getting carbheater shut offs, would that have anything to do with it?

I'm only a few hours east of you and suspect the strange snow conditions we had are similar to yours. Ice builds up under the foam filter. Now when I check the airbox I make sure to lift the foam too. Thinking about removing the toolbox (or making is easier to remove on the trail) to be able to scoop snow out the belly of the beast.

Mine didn't backfire, just a bog and took a long time to clear out.It ran smokin later at lower elevation, actually revving too high(close to 11,000.)

The snow was packing in and melting so much the steering was getting restricted.... every now and then I would stop and clear the steering by wicking the bars from stop to stop. By the end of the two-hour run in 2' to 3' powder it was crawling at 5000rpm. Letting it idle seemed to help a little, guessing the warmth from the engine cleared up the snowpack a little.

Eventually, we got back to civilization and took it inside and dumped a couple gallons of hot water in the nose to thaw it out. That's when I discovered the filter had frozen into the airbox. I pulled the airbox and washed it out completely with hot water. Dried the foam with compressed air and hit the trail again. Two hours (read: prolonged hard running - little to no stopping) later.... same thing.

The snow was unusually fine and light.

guys come on

i can't believe we are having a discussion about snow getting into the airbox,us rx-1 owners are smarter than that, just go to your local upholstery guy and have him cut you some vinyl covers, drill holes and snaps and voila here you go.do right it looks great and your problem solved.we id this last year and have not have a problem since.paparattler
