The stock skis are garbage. All the shims do is fix the darting. they don't make them a better ski

FormulaPro said:Hey... Craze... what made you go with the Intense track vs the 1.5 Ripsaw? I see that the Intense Track is clipped every 3rd... is every hole punched. I need every hole open as I will be switching to extro drivers when I do the track change. (you are going to have the exact same sled as me... except mine will have the electro shock!)
Thanks in advance,
Keith M.
I've had ripsaws before, and most here seem to agree with me that they're pretty much junk in deep snow which is what I do most of my riding in. Intense is much more of a paddle track than a Ripsaw, so I THINK it will be a better choice....but I'm just thinking and won't know till I try it. Yes, it's clipped every third, and the holes are closed. I'm gonna leave it that way and maybe try the SLP wear pads. If they don't work to my satisfaction, I can always cut the holes out and fully clip it, not that hard to do. Also intend to core it with a 1 1/8" hole saw to offset the gain in rotating mass from the wear pads, and to help it spit more snow out to make life more pleasant when I get stuck and have to lift this pig outa the deep. I've noticed quite a difference when I cored my Renegade track, and will do it to this one, too. I see no reason to go to extroverts until I've experienced excessive ratcheting. If that happens, I'll address it.
Bear in mind, I'm in uncharted territory here as I don't know any others who have actually done this exact setup to an Attak...and this is my first Yamaha EVER, though I did a lot of my type of riding on a borrowed 97 Mountain Max 700 one winter...it was a nice sled with a 136 x 1.5 inch track. The extra beef of the Attak may be an issue, but the MM was no featherweight either and I really liked it, so I'm hoping the Attak may not be that bad...So I can't say I recommend my plan just yet, I'm working on theory only and sharing my thoughts. So check back with me next January when I'll know if I screwed up....
My backup plan: I may not like this sled for boondocking, and might end up using it as my primarly trail sled and buying a Freestyle 550 Backcountry or Yamaha Phazer mountain for my boondocking rides. That's probably smarter but I'm hoping I can create a do-it-all sled and am looking forward to feeling this 150 4 stroke motor that I fell in love with on a demo ride this past winter. I'm gonna give it a year and see how I like it off trail. I'll be lifting lots of weights this summer to prep for my digouts!

Thanks. Had already planned to put them on from the get-go...they are not standard with Slydogs (at least not from the dealer I bought them from), but will probably spit out the $15 to $20 and slap them on over the summer sometime. Frankly darting doesn't concern me much since I'm not on trails often, but once in a while I do a trail day and it'd certainly be nice to go straight on those days! I'm also thinking ski savers should give the ski a slightly deeper keel...might help with low speed off trail tree weaving, might not. We'll just have to wait and see.
My other plan is to switch to Stud Boy Shaper bars on these Slydogs, WITH ski savers. But I'm gonna try to wear out the original 6 inch carbides that came with the SlyDogs first, then see if switching to shapers helps them like I've found they help all my other skis....also adds a little bit more keel. But if the Dogs don't need it, I won't do it.

They are the Ski-Doo handles and you don't need to shim them. The way the Ski-Doo rubber mounting blocks are designed, when installed on an Apex they automatically push the back of the ski down as if you had shimmed them.
As welterracer had asked...what size carbides are you running on the pilot ski's? Also, where did you buy them from(who has the best price on them)?

The center and outside came with 4" carbides. Depending on performance I may go with 6" for the center bar. I got an awesome price $225 on E-Bay. Then came off a guys brand new Doo. The stock skis are the 5.7, he had the Mountain skis (6.9) from his last sled that he put on this 06 as soon as he got it home. I did see more of them on E-Bay though. Do a search on e-bay motors for ski-doo pilot ski and you will find them.

Did you encounter any problems when installing them on your sled(did you need any more parts). By the way...thanks for the info! I am down to two options now, buy the Bergstrom triple points and shim or go with the pilot ski's and not have to shim.

I was told that you have to take one of the bushings on the Pilot ski and turn it around (take the inside bushing out and bush it into the ski from the outside) to make room for the steering knuckle to fit in the Pilot ski. I found that it fits better if you turn both of them around. I put very thin stainless washers between the steering knuckle and the ski on the inside of the ski to protect the plastic from the steering knuckle. Besides the performance benifits I think these Ski's look sweet. I can post pic's if anyone wants more info.
Not trying to get anyone excited, but Simmons will dart also in right conditions. I have had Simmons for 5 years and swore by them until I got my GT this year. I have done a lot of swaring at them now. On this sled, they have a tremendous amount of ski pressure and dart on decelleration on certain kinds of snow. I also tried Slydogs, but did not have the ski savers. They have a bunch less ski pressure than the Simmons and when I used them without the ski savers, they did not dart any more than the Simmons. I plan to go with the Slydogs and ski savers this fall. I have no experience with the Pilots.

I have mountain Apex skis on my attak. I have 6" tripple points and ski savers from bergstrom and I have them shimmed. I rode most of my miles this season with this set up and I was very happy. On and off trail.

Something with the design of the Apex front platform causes darting on any ski without adjustment to the ski.

i tried nearly the same setup on my attak except with 10" std carbides and it had major inside ski lift, it darted a bit on hardpack and steering effort was tiring after a while. didnt yours have any of these problems? i agree they were great in the powder and i love them on my 136" viper, but i just cant get enough ski pressure off of them to get them to work decent on the attak. btw my limiters are in the stock position, the transfer is set 1/4-1/3rd from min and the skis are shimmed.
snappy said:just wondering who put on aftermarket skis and who stuck with the stock ones.i ordered an 07 attack gt and i am wondering if ill have to put some c&a's on like on my 03 rx1.
MAN.........Ski's have sure come a longs ways since 1969 I'll tell you, they are like RUNNING SHOES. There are lots to choose from, they all do certain things better than others and Everybody will tell you how theirs are the best.
The Absolute fact is "ALL SKI's DART SOMEWHAT"
.......Even after market skis, as they need to be tweeked to your sled, but 1st you need to ask yourself one question. What type of riding do I do and whereabouts do I ride.
Now the fun starts as you now know where & how you ride, lets find a ski that will fit that profile for you. Once you think you have got the right ski for the job, it will be time to tweek those ski's for you and your sled. Shimming the skis will be the very first thing you will address, as this will remove a very large portion of your darting. Then you can start to fine tune your front end for things like ski lift and push, as taking out some front spring pressure and adjusting your weight transfer or even adjusting your limiter strap will again help with the last of your steering needs.
BTW..........The new skis that your 07 has are a pretty good ski, you might just want to try them out first. Then take it from there as to what level of steering you require.

Are the 07 skis different then the 06. If so how?

No I believe Yamaha is still using the same ski, but by production time who knows......
......The 06's ATTAKS have a 42.7 ctr to ctr on those skis, the 07's will be 42.0 ctr to ctr. The 07's also will have a Shorter Spindle and Longer A -Arms, the new set up will allow the spindles to maintaine a constant 23 degress. Yamaha feels this will help achive better handling and steering than the 06 line up had. I guess when the 07's actually come out we shall see just how good they really are.
