On the 09 Yamaha R-TX with the 1.25" Ripsaw track - do I need tunnel protectors ? What stud lenght and should I just run them up the centre /offset ?

The 09 rtx already has tunnel protectors installed fromt he factory. I would run a 1.325 woodys. I ran the megabites, I have very good luck with them and the fast trac xl backers, they are plastic with a tall neck on them so they are lighter but yet I think stronger than aluminum which will bend.
I would only stud the middle of the track, and I just make my own pattern off setting the studs to get alot of scratch lines. depending on your riding style, 96 studs for just trail riding, and up to 144 for very aggressive riding. here is a link to give you some ideas on how to find a pattern.

I just studded mine before the season, no tunnel protectors required they are already there. I really like double backers, I have 3400 miles on the studs in my Fusion without a single pull thru and I am only running 96 on a 140hp sled, it too has a 1.25" Ripsaw. I went with 96 Woodys Megabites 1.325" and Aluminium Double Digger support plates. The pattern I used is off of Woodys website. It is an alternating pattern of 4-0-4, seems to work quite well.

I also ran a 2 in the middle pattern with 96 studs. If you do a ton of lake running, superchargers etc you may want more.
If you are going to do it yourself, do yourself a favor and make sure that you have air equipment. This will save you hours and hours of banging your head. And get a track cutter.
Also helpful hint, run the track cutter and keep going, the heat off of the cutter that you generate makes drilling easier.
