My wife rides an Attak which has been studded and my 08 Apex 40th LTX just can't make it through the same stuff, especially in the late season when the south facing slopes turn to ice. She's waited at the top of several hills while I try repeatedly to get up them and just laughs in the intercom.
I'm a complete noob when it comes to studs but I just want to be able to get up the icy hills, it isn't a drag machine. I know there are head exchangers in there to watch out for. Her sled has a v pattern that repeats, but I haven't counted them yet on hers, but is there a go-to number and model for studs that you guys like on these sleds? I've read until my eyes bled and am no closer to making a decision, so point me in the right direction, please.

i do not run studs but have read a lot on them. as they are your 1st i would do the equivilent of the 96 studs for a 121" track in the middle belt only. go with solid steel ones reccomended legnth for your lug height with double backers to help with tear outs. you do need to run the correct track tension and re torque them a few times after rides as i have read about them loosening up on guys. you might also need to add material to the protectors over the rear cooler if the studs look to contact it.
if you are needing a new track, you always try one of the pre studded ice tracks. i did run an ice ripper for a few years and it was better than an unstudded track for sure but the difference was not enough for me to buy another for how i ride and where.
have not heard anything bad about the i grips yet and i know that mrsled and a few others run them. thinking about them for the 11 apex that the gf rides.

Your ltx will have a 15x136 x1.25 track, most everyone uses 108 studs for the 136 track, this equates to 2 studs per bar(studding the center of track only) if you are going to do it yourself you will need a track studding template, a paint pen& a track stud drill bit to drill the holes,you will want studs that are 1.325 tall, if you aren’t a super aggressive rider& if you try not to spin on rocks, asphalt etc you can use the single backers, or you can use the double backers but they will require using more studs.everyone has a different opinion on round or square backers& the brand of studs but I’ve always used aluminum backers& had excellent results, any name brand stud will be fine for normal trail riding,snowstuds is a vendor on here& make a great product in my opinion so that would be an option& support tyMy wife rides an Attak which has been studded and my 08 Apex 40th LTX just can't make it through the same stuff, especially in the late season when the south facing slopes turn to ice.
