Has anyone ever seen the page http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm I'm awaiting my new 05 RX-1 ER and wonder if I should folloe the break-in as per the manual or try this. I broke in my wife's 03 for her as per the manual and it seems fine, doesn't burn oil no problems up to now (6000 km's). What do you think of this article, it makes sense to me??????

Thanks

That moron who wrote that is a mechanic who is trying to destroy motors to increase his number of potential customers. Doing that will DAMAGE your motor. Running too hard right away will cause localized points of extreme heat / burning without setting off your temperature light, so parts of it will be overheating the whole time without you even knowing it.

LB... I think you are looking into it to far! He isnt saying to run it WFO for hours on end..

He is just saying dont baby it!!

I know in automotive engines ,which are not that different from the rx engine, that they brake them in on dynos under 3/4throttle under heavy loads for short bursts of time..(same should be used on the rx)

There is alot more technology in engine compared to 30years ago.. they use torque plates on the cylinders and have way better equipment! Therefore if you baby them they will glaze the cylinders pretty quickly!!

Do what you want.. but 1400miles on my sled and i do not burn any oil.. I know there is alot of guys out ther that burn LOTS!

There´s been a lot of discussions in this forum about this subject and the discussions will continue! But regardless of other´s opinions i´m breaking in my RX Warrior according to mototuneusa´s web site, which is to beat the crap out of it. Unfortunately i only got 300 miles on my sled last winter before the snow melted, but when i changed the oil a week ago i cranked it a couple of times and it fired right up! And i have had no oil use at all with 300 miles on it and i will continue to beat the crap out of it when there´s snow enough out there again. And yes mototuneusa is making sense to me.

just my 2 cents

:4STroke: :yam:

I have a few comments both good and bad. I believe regardless of how you break it in, the engine is going to run. You may never keep the sled long enough to see the engine outlast the chassis.

I have seen that! I had an Exciter II once and the engine outlasted the chassis. And guess what? I have allways beaten the crap out of the engine since it was new and I never had any issues with the engine. But the chassis got totalled when a moron rear ended me with about 20000 miles on my sled! :o|

Ernie, Remember the Phazer? I've heard of a few that put on more miles on that one sled and their spouses liked it so much they wouldn't trade them in.

i broke mine in kinda hard. for the first few miles i would just do a few WOT bursts. after a couple hundred miles i would run WOT on the powder for a mile or two. At 750 miles, i run it at WOT on frozen lakes at 85 mph.

no problems yet. hopefully this season will turn out ok.

I am amazed by the number of people who will buy a $10,000 sled or bike, that comes with a very well written owners manual, from a company that spends millions every year on its race programs...... and then follow the advice of some assclown on the internet about how to break their engine in.

jdkrxw: I agree with you except for one thing: I don't think the owner's manual is particularly well written. A lot of guys I know thought they were not supposed to rev the motor over 8000 rpm for something like 600 km's. The owner's manual doesn't say that but enough people made that mistake that it should be changed.

Snowsweat, I gotta disagree. This is copied directly from the manual and it seems pretty clear to me.

0–160 km (0–100 mi)
Avoid prolonged operation above 6,000 r/min.
160–500 km (100–300 mi)
Avoid prolonged operation above 8,000 r/min.
500 km (300 mi) and beyond
The snowmobile can now be operated normally.

You and I understand the manual, but many RX-1 owners did not. I have even heard dealers and mechanics tell guys not to rev it out. The manual should have stated that full throttle operation is recommended during break-in. I think a lot of formerly 2-stroke guys got nervous about break-in and thought they would play it "safe". It seems odd that so many people made the same mistake.

From NASCAR, to drag racing, how do the racers break in their engines? Does Jeff Gordan drive #24 for for 10,000 miles at low speeds before a 500 mile race?
