I was working on a honda powered sled a few years ago. I only got just the very basic fitment testing done and decided it wouldn't work for trail use because of the way the engine sat. i was trying to put a CBR1000 motor in an extra ZRT800 chassis i had. I got as far as trying to set the engine in the chassis and get it somewhere close to fitting under the hood, and it would never happen. Because of the transmission, the engine wound up way too far forward, making it VERY nose heavy and the engine would be too high. I thought about turning it around (Yamaha style), but it still wouldn't fit, plus the drive output shaft of the transmission was on the wrong side of the sled to make a connection to the jackshaft. I thought about eliminating the chaincase and running a chain down to the drive shaft, but I ran into way too many issues. It was a fun experiment though.
This was always a dream of mine...getting a 4-stroke bike engine into a sled. Then the RX came out...and I was at the dealership with cash in hand.

Yep...they've got lots of them, and I think the Diamond Drive people have made a few compromises to get around Big Red's intellectual property.
When we went to pick up a F7 a couple years ago in Canada (exchange rate was better back then..) the dealer we got the F7 from said he had sold 10-20 RX-1's to Honda (can't really remember the number). He didn't know what they were doing with them.
As for reliability, if you work on Honda bikes, when you get one in for service.. 1st thing you do is look at the VIN. For those who do work on them.. you know what I am talking about

When did Honda make their first sled?
Actually kind of a trick question because of course Honda never had a production snowmobile. But they did have a prototype and that was introduced via a press release in 1971. It was a fairly conventional looking sled powered by a four stroke engine. Then in 1974, a few prototypes of a rear engined scooter type sled emerged called the White Fox. There are a few (2-3?) floating around amongst collectors in the USA. A few years ago one was actually for sale at the Haydays snowmobile swap meet in MN. You can get more info on this sled from the Vintage Snowmobile Club of America
