To bolt, or not to bolt....

Yeah that bolt has been updated twice now. I have the 3rd version in my sled so when I take it apart I'm hoping it's still in one piece. I don't think it would cause a problem to run without it, lots of guys have. I'm thinking putting that chaincase back together would be a PITA without it tho. :o|

I ordered a bolt today. When I took the chaincase apart, everything stayed on the sled, so i don't know how hard it would be to put it back together without the bolt. I just have to work on getting the old bolt out. Im not sure what the part number of the bolt that I ordered. All I know is that the 2009 and 2010 both superceded to this number.

X2. I can't imagine how you'd get the chaincase back together without it, though obviously people have.

But it's easy enough to change, and while it might not be necessary, it makes reassembly sooooooo much easier.

I got it out and the new bolt installed. Hopefully I have everything back in the right spot. I haven't ran the sled to make sure the all is good, but the reverse lever works and feels the same as before.

The bolt I got was about 1/4" shorter than the one that was in there, and it's threaded all the way to the head of the bolt.

With the bolt broke and the broke piece taken out is there anyplace for the gear to go while the cover is on? If the gear cant go anyplace then going without the bolt could be an option with the chain holding it in place. I would fix it though for peice of mind if its not that big of a job.

the proper fix is to fill the voidd behind the hub with a spacer

Is there a space with bolt version 3? I know there was with the 1st and 2nd but the 3rd version is shorter.

I don't believe there is a void. When I tightened the bolt, the hub and that shaft that the sprocket and gears ride on meet together.

the spacer goes between hub and shaft. giving it something to bottom against along with bearing. removes flex. has been an overlooked problem with all makes for many years. these are heavy sleds, with driveshaft very exposed. couple of hits and pop, off comes the bolt head
