My 06 Yamaha Attak runs strong but it runs too rich. There is black soot in the tail pipes. I changed my oil at 1,000 miles and it tested as not fit for further use do to fuel dilution. My Attak has hit 126 mph on the dream O Meter. I have never been beaten in a drag race by other Yamahas or by anything else either.
My engine was turning 10,800 rpms plus with stock clutching, but I installed a Hauck Clutch kit which solved this problem.
Also I only get 12 mpg riding easy and 10 mpg riding really hard.
I am considering an after market exhaust and opening up the intake to lean it out.
I am simply running too rich and don't know how to correct this...
Thanks for any ideas! Skibum4106

Did you buy the sled new or used? Reason I ask is that if bought used someone may have put an aftermarket fuel controller on it, which could richen it up A LOT.

Attak Too Rich
I bought the sled new. It does not have an after market fuel controller. I see that Hauk sells a fuel controller that can only go richer.
I also see that Dynojet does sell a fuel controller and can go 100% richer or leaner. http://www.widebandcommander.com/
The above link is to monitor your present settings and to watch your changes.
The actual controller is here. http://www.widebandcommander.com/
It comes with a Zero fuel curve which means it does not change your stock fuel settings....
The two units combined are over $700.00 I think.. I just found these things after I posted my question. Dynojet has been building these things for motorcycles for a while now I gather.
I guess the only way you can change a closed loop system is to add a fuel controller...
The Mikuni Yamaha fuel injection system is rather crude compared to what automobiles have.
I think 10-12 MPG is unacceptable.

If this were my sled, it would have been back to the dealer right away. Either the fuel system is set incorrectly and staying on the enrichener tune, or you have track tension , clutching issues. I weigh 290 lbs. and NEVER cruise with my Attak. Last season on a weeklong bagger trip to the UP, averaged 16.2 for the week. To give you an idea of the speeds we were riding at, 267 mi. in 6.5 hours. And we stopped for breakfast, lunch and a quick fuel stop. There is definitely something out of whack with your machine. If your dealer can't or won't sort it out for you, find another dealer. Best of luck with correcting this issue.

I would also bring it back to the dealer. i dont know how yamahas fuel injection is set up but ive seen cars to this when the fuel pressure regulator is bad. Too much gas to the point where it ends up in the oil is bad. I wouldnt buy anyting id have the dealer address it. PS i saw viper dave in gwynn on one trip upnorth they do ride pretty hard.

My Apex has been getting 12-14 average. I've been working with Yamaha but the problem has not been solve yet!!! The put it on a gas anaylzer and adjusted per Yamaha setting which seemed to make it worse. Hopefully I'll get better results. How many miles do you have? I have over 6,000. I wish I could average 16.2mpg

I have over 8,000 miles on my Apex and have never seen anything over 13mpg. It is usually 12-13. I have discussed it with my dealer many times. Yamaha had them run Seafoam with no results. I was told this is pretty much the average for sleds that are rode hard. I wish the mileage was better but there is nothing more I can do at this point. My throttle is usually opened or closed. Maybe I will try really hard this winter to ride slow and see what happens.

Ya - i can relate - This great gas mileage sled had left me on the trail tooo many times - ive run out at about 85 miles after fill up - ya i fill it all the way up.
- you can put a 5qt (oil) container of gas in the nose under the hood - thats the best solution ive seen to this problem.
- Yes Yamaha - this is another problem you wont address - im sick of talken to them. they used to work with their customers to solve problems instead of pass the buck. "weve never herd of that issue" "your the only one" - i need another beer - and a mxz x!
- hows you 06 chain case doen? better change your cover to an 07 or you'll be sorry! -

My '06 Attak w/1,400mi. also has 'soot' around where the tailpipe exits. I get 13 MPG in Canada where we're hammer down all day & 15MPG on an average trail ride in Maine. I don't think the soot is cause for alarm as all other RX-1's, Vectors, Apex's, etc. seem to do the same. My '05 FJR 1300 bike does the same. I don't know the root cause for the soot but I'm passing it off as normal.
Before you go tinkering, I'd consult your dealer as you may spend time / money / aggrevation for naught.

Lean it down with Ulmer racing airbox mod. +4hp

I ride pretty damn hard on my '06 Attak and get 15-16 mpg average.

There is nothing wrong with your sled, they all get that mileage if yuor riding it even a little agressively.
Dont worry about it, but the airbox mod really sounds good and is something I am looking at as well.
The soot is normal as well. Have some faith in yamaha and know that it was built right. Dont let all the hype from the other manufacturers sleds always being toilets make you think that there is something wrong with the attak.

Something seems funny, 'Rich' and a good performer ?
My Apex usually gets ~14 -16 max, less when breaking trail hard.
I have never seen mid 120's on the dream meter, but then again never ran hard in good conditions. but she sure gets to 117 in a hurry on snow, always run out of room
I am not sure I would change anything. A few dollars more on gas but you know it fly's.
