Hi Guys,
Just coming back to TY for this first time this season.
Does anyone have first hand experience with Thunder Products TPI valves?
I just installed 4 in the air box last night but the foam hood insulation appears very very close to the TPI openings. It seems to make sense to rip the insulation out to give it more room to breath.
I'm going to install one more TPI valve on the belt guard to help cool the clutches. The whole stock clutch area is very closed in and I can't see how they cool at all!!
Any feed back is appreciated.
Jetting??
Everytime we get snow it rains two days later. The ice is all messed up and lake running is out for now.

I did the same thing - - - installed 4 valves, cut and removed the foam only to find that the sled would only run 9800 rpms with them open. I had it clutched to run 10200 with them closed. I never bothered to open them again (another waste of money). I think it got more air and ran lean.

Trash the airbox and get the ECP K&N filters, the kit comes with 165 jets to compensate for the increased air flow.

Installed 4 valves and Flo-Commander. Was able to jet up to 140 and now run valves open all of the time. Works very well.

Toolman: did you run them before changing the jets? What happened if so?
Did they effect the RPM??
Did you pick up any performance? Topend?
Are the jets for the CV's the same style as TM's or VM's?
Did you change the springs?
Thanks for any info.

It was initially a little lean to run them all the way open at anything below about 25. But you really could feel the difference at those warmer temps. I would run them about 1/2 open down near zero. With this years results and using the Flo-Commander for tuning I am now running them all the way open and have jetted up to 140. The main jets are the small round, almost like Holley mains.

Oh yeah, I noticed 50-150 rpm increase depending on temps. This year I have been working with the Holtzman springs and I think I have it about sorted out for a few drivability issues. It is amazing what those little tuning receptors in your behind will tell you when you listen to them and not all the "hip" setups.

I, like Grauser, lost RPM from 10, 500 initial shift, backing down to 10,100 (VALVE CLOSED) to 9800 with the TPI open only 1/2 way. The sled felt flat.
This with the green Holtzman springs.
I'll jet up and try the next easier springs and let you know the results.

Any time you increase airflow you have to increase the jetting accordingly.
I don't think the valves are a waste of money if you jet the carbs to match.
I would jet them for 20 degrees with all valves open all the way, then when it gets colder you can close them some to richen as necessary.

You may have to start with 145 mains.

I picked up 140's, 142-1/2, and 150's but had a very hard time trying to get the screws out. I was afraid I was going to strip the heads. I'll attempt it again if I can get my hands on an impact driver. TM's are a lot easier.

To remove the bowl screws, a good quality Phillips screwdriver is very important, I like Mac or Snap on.
It must fit the screw tight.
Second, a little heat really helps, I use a Heat gun or good blow dryer.
There is a green loc tite on the screws that releases with heat.

I don't like an impact screw driver because there is too much shock that can break the carb.

I forgot to mention that you will need to remove the hood insulation above the airbox lid. At high speeds the hood flexes and the insulation is pulled into the valves. Just remove the panel right above the airbox.

Ted........ thanks for the tip on the carb screws. I'll give it another try. Hey...I'm right up Route 8 on Otis Res. You should look me up some time. The ice is in and the riding was great until it rained yesterday. The ice is still there but I haven't cut it today.
Toolman..... I noticed the foam as sonn as I installed the TPI's and ripped it out. Yamaha even did an over kill job on the glue they used to hold the foam in. After working on Yamaha's it easy to see why they have the best quality out there.
