I am trying to decide on a track. If 1.25" is good, wouldn't an 1.5" or even 2" be better. I would like to hear from those of you who have experience with these differnt tracks. I would like to know the pros and cons of each.
Boston RX1, if you ride groomed trails you will be better off with the 1.25, for off trail and powder use a taller lug. a taller lug track needs more snow for lubrication of the slidders (hyfax). you will smoke your slidders using a 2" lug track on groomed trails (any hard packed surface). also you lose top end speed with tall lug track ( more rotating mass). a tall lug track used anywhere except deep snow (or water) will be subjected to premature wear.
I ran a 1 3/4 inch track on a 2000 Summit 700. I was originally worried about it on trails as that is mostly what I ride. After about 9000 miles on the sled I have some stratling findings. First found that the slides lasted longer? Thought it would be the opposite. Suspect that the paddle actually digs up a bit more snow for better lube. Thought that maybe the ride would be more jittery but didn't notice the difference. Traction was awesome to say the least. Could launch on snow covered Lakes better than those with studs. Studs did obviously have an advantage on ice. Found that the track didn't damage trails like some think. Again it does depend on how you ride. The track still shows little to no wear. The longer paddles do increase windage and reduce top end speed. All that said your best option is the 1.25 if you are mainly on the trails.
