I've been hearing about motors blowing this year. One from a dealer, one from a private repair business. They said the fuel is blowing these motors. I can't believe that. Is it just old motors that weren't made for newer fuels?
Scary....

Im shure all the sleads that are blowing up are from bearing failer not gas or even bad gas. Im willing 2 bet there all 2 CHOCKS. I just left the dealer nothing but 2 strocks in the shop all motor problems or cog bearing failer

My wife has a 03 vmax 600er..what do you think she'll get out of that motor? She drives it like an old lady..(she's 52)..:)but looks 30

10000 milesor so I have 8500 on 1999 sx 600 compresion is still good

as long as u keep up on the carb cleaning 10,000 isnt a problem, the triple non power valve motors are bullet proof. the only problem my brother, his buddies or my self have ever had was dirt carbs and the water pump screw falling out and the impeller rubbing a hole in the water pump case. but thats on his 98. he even ran his 2000 700 for 10 miles with no coolent in it when he blew his heat exchanged and it got so hot the paint on the head turned orange but the sled still ran. we've had 2 2000 sxr 700, 1 98 xtc 700, and my brotehr buddy has both a viper and a 02 vmax dlx. no real problems other then dirty carbs sence they switched to the 10% ethonal. oh i blew mine up one time but thats cause i put a bost bottle on and didnt do an air leak test and the crapy little clamps i had on 2 of the intake boots leaked. didnt even know i burnd threw 2 pistons other then a 300 rpm drop on top end. still had tons of power.

I found this article "Ethanol fuels are becoming more commonplace throughout the snowbelt. Speed shops and engine builders have traditionally recommended shying away from ethanol fuel whenever possible, because non-ethanol fuel is typically more stable and consistent. However, in some areas you can no longer get fuel without ethanol in it. In other areas, stations that have not sold ethanol fuels are now converting. Those with highly tuned sleds need to be aware that fuels containing 10% ethanol will require different calibrations than fuels without ethanol to maintain a proper fuel-air ratio, especially with highly-tuned engine calibrations.
On carbureted models, it is typically recommend to increase the main jet size 2 to 3 sizes when running ethanol fuels. Fuel injected sleds require different calibrations as well. Arctic Cat has used an ethanol jumper wire on the ECU in the past. Other manufacturers have dealt with it differently.
The main thing is you need to know what kind of fuel you’re using. If you are jetted or calibrated for non-ethanol fuel, a tank of ethanol fuel could be disastrous for the high-performance engine. Check with their dealer or performance shop for the recommendations for their specific model."

Probably will see her out. LOL .

They are pretty much bullet proof.

I had 2 600 and 3 700 Yamaha Single piped Triples. No problems with any until 19,000 KM when Jackshaft broke on the 98 700. Bad waterpump seal on the 01 700 Deluxe.

This aint your buddys Cat/Doo/Poo.

She can drive it like a rental, it won't break.

we saw fuel problems with outboards in minnesota a few years ago - Minneapolis area had numerous problems with melt downs but further north we did not with similiar motors and similiar conditions.

I've been using the "bad" E10 gas in minnesota for over 15 years now in "2 strokes" not one issue with gas IF its fresh. If you let a sled sit all summer with E10 in it the carbs will get need a cleaning in the fall, same with outboards if you let gas sit in the gas can all winter. I just put a tank of 100% gas into the sled for the last tank of the season and its go to go, like wise I run the my boat motors for 10 minutes in the test tank with a 100% gas in the fall also to get the E10 out of the carbs. Yamaha 2 strokes are jetted to Run E10 safely, Mine at -20*f has a nice carmel color on the plugs, and 100% "offroad" only gas gives me a dark brown color at the same temp.

I agree 100% with you.

15+ years here with e10 as well and no burn downs in any of my 2 strokes, even my 87 indy trail has had no issues. That sled has like 15,000 miles on it.

Agree completely. E10 = no problem. Now, I don't entirely buy the environmental advantages - too much politics in ethanol. But it doesn't damage engines.

Yeah, I won't go into the politics of ethanol. Talk about a can of worms.....

I do know that a gallon of gasoline uses the same amount of water that a gallon of ethanol takes to make...3 gallons.

It is an interesting idea making fuel from plants, but it needs to be refined a little more (no pun intended) and use non food items like corn kernels or sugar cane to make ethanol. Now when they can get the cost down on making ethanol from algae or the corn stalks, then we should be set, and not so reliant on opec.
