turbo apex vs turbo cat

It's the annual weenie roast on lake Namakagan at lakewoods resort. They usually have 1,000' speed runs on Saturday then two lane 660' ice drag's. Lake racing all weekend, snow outlaw's drag races and the pump gas/trail sled shoot out, Saturday as well.
It's huge, 25 sleds wide lake racing all day Friday and Saturday!

Weekend of March 7th.

Well crap, I'll be in Revy then...... have to make it next year!

Go in to HCS and read some of the setup's. Sounds like some are 151"-162" some what purpose built yet trailable sled's. From what I have read 280 on meth and pump gas is about the best you will see out of a Cat and pump gas so I would question 300? One said his sled track dynoed 140 HP, that would be about 245HP motor. I would guess about the best you will run into in a Cat on the trail is 260

The CATS at the claimed 300hp level, race fuel and meth, there were a few of them at our local radar runs...'trail' sleds...they ran 122-123-125mph in 1320 feet on a radar gun at their best on the better of the two days.. I ran 119mph with about 220hp and 91 octane on the first day in the freezing rain and shitty track.
I then went TRAIL riding afterwards for some hot wings and beers.....they put their sleds back in their trailers.

About the only good thing I've seen or heard so far about these yamacats and turbocats is that the chassis is a nice ride.

oh...and I didn't see the HURRICANE Turbo Viper (stage 2 240hp) run better than 109mph....maybe it did after I left, I dunno.

If I don't run the shoot out there is always endles lake racing going on to have plenty of fun with. I had a lot of fun last year on the groomed track when they were done!

Yes the hp#'s are limited by the pump gas requirement. I did question him about the 300, I think he was rounding up to whole 100's. Here is my track dyno run and I am at 143.65 which translates to 252 crank hp. Ulmer seems to think I can get away with the full 12#'s on good pump gas but it scares me, I blew 1 motor up last year. I now carry 110 octane with me and blend with pump to get over 96.

The RTX 129" and LTX 137" versions are very flat and do not hook up well on launch with the extra ponies of a turbo they spin the track. My XTX hooks up very hard but was terrible on the trails. I have spent a year and much $$$$ to finally get it both hot on speed runs and tight twisties. I have coupled the rear suspension and am on my 3rd set of shock packages. Finally the Axis shocks are what this sled needed to be trailable .

The XTX is geared low, track dyno said it will do 117 but I have not had a place to do that yet. Best so far is 111 on GPS, but it gets there so fast. Best run 0 to 100 so far was 6.4 ish seconds and that was on a lake that was not packed or groomed. In 660 ft the CAT will not be close but 1320 may be able to freight train me at the far end. I have plenty of room to get more top end with gearing but I like the rush coming out of the hole.

I have owned a mcx nytro and a xf 1100t and they are both pretty much done at 280hp on pump but with very little mods the cat turbo will shine my sled set up with d&d mods for an improved stock turbo would run 500 ft in high 4s at 110-115... comparing the 1100 to an apex just isn't fair the four hole yami will run higher hp on pump and leave the cat behind all in all the cats are not slow if set up correctly...I will say that my nytro would spank the cat on the trails (pump gas)as far as performance but not in the handling department. I'm not sure the difference in the nytro to the viper performance wise but I'll I hear about is how they hit a wall at 100ish with or without a turbo.

Well they hit the wall without clutch mods in both set ups. Yamaha missed the boat on the clutching from stock and spring bind in the secondary was limiting full shift out on the turbo guys. I have worked through all of that and now at stock gearing have top end of 117 that can be streched easily into the 130's with gear change now that I have the HP to pull it. I have seen 111 on GPS with more to go but ran out of road and my 0 to 100 calcs were done based on the contour camera that records GPS, Speed, time and distance but is not accurate to the seconds on replay. Plus that was on loose snow not a track. That is why I am hunting a radar run or trail turbo drag race to get some solid numbers before I change gearing and put the cat turbo into it and blow closer to 20#'s into it.

I ran 110 at a 1,000' speed run we came across while on our club ride going in to a 35MPH head wind. I was set at 5LB ish, 215 HP. Won 1,000 open mod and fastest speed of the day. We were only there for about 30 min than wen't back trail riding. We wen't back that night to pick up the two trophies. Oh this run was on timer's not an un calibrated radar gun!

Hi stone! I have a plan with Allen Ulmer and a Nytro to run the pump gas/trail sled shoot out they have been running here in Wisconsin so if that all works out I will leave my Apex as it is just because it handles the volume of sleds I run into and just works so well every where else. If the Nytro don't work out I may have to do a fuel pump PC-V/ignition module to pull timing so I can run 10 LB on pump gas.

How does the MCX Viper run? Is it an over achever like all the rest of the MCX kit's?

I'm really happy with my Viper I love the ride and yes it is an over achiever like all the rest of there kits, the best I have gotten out of it so far is 126 on the GPS but the gear was so tall I lost a lot of my mid range pull so I geared back down to 22/41 and can still hit 123 but pull really hard down low and mid range just waiting for Allen to get me a gear so I can have both. I haven't ran it in 1320' at an event yet but our impromptu race it has gone 114-115 in 1320 all things being equal the numbers are in line with other known sleds there. You know how it is conditions are everything and they were perfect that day. On a side note testing the next day I blew my track off at 121 mph and went for a long coast but luckily I managed to keep it right side up.

Ouch glad you kept it straight! I lost a track on a V-Max 4 years ago, it's a spooke ride! To this day it makes me nervous running those kinds of speed's on a trail track.
126 in that chasis is very good as it seams they don't MPH the best. Did you tell me my kit on your Apex GPSed 131 at 5LB?

Yes 131-132 with 6# of boost but no comparison in top speed the 4 bangers have a huge advantage on top en not to mention more hp
In 1320' it might be a toss up but after that its all 4 cyl

Did you run my kit at 6 on the trail and 91 octane? I have been at 5-5.5 LB. Except a couple times at 7 with Torco concentrate at about 94-95 octane.
