Venture GT front suspension question

Hey guys,

I just added new 4" carbides and the 7" wide yamaha ski skins to my machine and its darting like crazy when cruising on groomed trails. I want to take pressure off of skis but can't budge the adjusters on the shocks is there a trick to it?

I was also wondering about the use of shims on the skis for this model machine to take some of the pressure or darting effect?

And lastly it doesn't appear the skis are "toe in" but what is best way to check?

You guys have always Been helpful
 

Single carbides or Doolies?

Jeez...seems like 80+% of all sleds need the skis shimmed behind the spindle. This very well could improve it but make all the darting go away? Not likely IMO.

With properly shmmed skis running a dual wearbar, darting is pretty much a thing of the past. Some people complain about pushing in corners.....ICGARA about a little push. I HATE darting and don't want it at any cost!

Lots of threads here about checking toe adjustment. Let the search function be your friend! :)

I had to add dually carbides to lessen the darting. I also softened up both rear suspension springs. Better,but not perfect.

Did you shim the skis? Did you check the toe out?
 
Yes I checked and adjusted the toe out. I have not shimmed the skiis, but I may in the future.

IMO....before you do any more adjusting you should shim your skis if needed. How were the "old" wearbars wearing that you've had on this sled?
 
Ski's are even not toe in or out. The ski's are not shimmed and the wear bars wore down to #*$&@ primarily on the left side. Is relieving the front shock spring pressure help? What tool do u use?

if you are trying to do any changes on a ground down set of wear bars then stop right now. dont do any changes until you have a new pair of carbides on otherwise you are just wasting your time!


if there is significant wear more on one side then thats an indicator something isn't right, possibly blown shock
Adjusting the front shock spring will do nothing as far as how much weight your skis are actually putting on the ground, it just adjusts how much impact they take. I've been wrong on changing this stuff before so you are gonna have to use the search function and find your specific make/model on here. Generally ski pressure is adjusted in the skid/track area via the shocks, limiter strap and transfer rod. I wouldnt touch either the strap or transfer rod at all and just focus on the other suspension parts first.

I suggest finding your model/year sled maintenance manual. Either buy a vip memership here or do some searching around on google and you can get a manual. Start by making sure the front suspension is set equal on both sides, make sure the shocks work.

Dual carbides are a must imho, don't know what exact ones you are running but yeah.

Realize there are tons of reasons why the sled darts so keep an open mind, that and at certain speeds, with the right snow conditions/temps there will always been a small amount of darting. good luck

I only have a minute but if you are running single bar carbides you will still experience your darting issue in varying degrees. You can follow anybody's advice here that you chose but one common "FIX" to darting on these and any other sled is to install dual runners. i.e. Woody's Doolies, Stud Boy Duece Bars or others. As I have found, the Yamaha Tuner skis, while MUCH betttr than the old single keel skis, will still dart and hunt.
 
BergStrom skegs 8" tripple points and his shims with some thicker rubbers I got from Scott on my Venture GT has me out running even some of the hot dogs on the trails.

front end fix for darting is pretty simple

  1. snow tracker carbides (semi-aggressive)
  2. set toe-out to 0 (nothing)
  3. set front springs with zero preload
 
My carbides wear more on the left than on the right. When riding roads the left ski is often on pavement while the right is on the snow.
 
Put on dual carbides shimmed the ski's that bad boy runs straight as an arrow
