2014 Viper xtx, Thunder products clutch kit
last year I bought my first yamaha snowmobile, a 2009 nytro xtx. I never imagined there could be such an amazing engine, totally awesome. I had a few problems like the fuel relay and some wire harness rub-thru, but thanks to this forum I was able to fix both quite easily. Of course the handling of the nytro is a bit sluggish off trail which I love to do whenever the snow permits in norther wisconsin. Last 2 winters have been fantastic. So now I'm thinking of either getting a new viper xtx or investing in a new a arm package for the nytro to improve handling. I've heard people have had great results with these mods. My question is as follows; will the front end mods help the nytro handle anywhere near as well as a viper? Or would I be better off upgrading to the viper because there is no comparison? I haven't ridden a viper yet but I've heard they are pretty awesome and don't feel as heavy off trail. Thanks!!

Well you came to the right place to ask. I had two Nytros one for me and one for girlfriend. Spent untold time and money determined to make a Nytro handle off trail. Girlfriends Nytro we cut down to 551 wet (yes it can be done) with Timbersled skid and Barkbuster arms up front. Better than stock but unacceptable to me. Then I modified the front arms to make the Nytro 37 inches wide and 2 inches forward, this made an amazing difference in the Nytro but as the fuel tank and engine sat so high it was still topheavy. So now it was much much better than stock but still lacking. The other Nytro was set up the same way but 36 inches wide, that seemed to hurt trail a bit but better in the off trail. This Nytro had a 280hp Supercharger on it.

Bottom line, you can't compare the off trail of a Nytro vs a Viper any more than you can compare an Apex to a Phazer........they are that different. If you don't have any Viper near you to test ride find somebody with a 2014 or newer Cat and ride it they are so close you will get the idea.

Below pic of both those sleds at 12k altitude. One with blue seat was the lightweight one, but no matter how light the weight is up high.

Thanks for the info. I see that you have a viper xtx. Is the handling off trail in stock form excellent compared to your nytro or just different? Does it feel heavy in the powder like the nytro? I have to manhandle the heck out of my nytro to carve in deep powder, I am hoping the viper is more nimble and requires less effort. Are you glad you made the switch? I also see that you sold your m8. Did you miss the 4 stroke?
Thanks again for your thoughts!

Viper XTX comes with a track that is small for mountains, so we converted both XTX to MTX. Nytro you wrestle and Viper drives itself in my opinion. Viper set up correctly feels as light as the Cat m8, and after I did my mods the Viper pleased me enough I sold the 2014 M8. Viper you can sit down, slide your butt to the left steer right in deep powder and carry the ski in the air as far as you want. The Nytro was really tough to get it to carve and being so top-heavy was hard to hold. Balance is amazing. You wont stand up half the time you do on the Nytro. Test drive on or ride a Cat, Cat handles the same but lacks the 4 stroke torque otherwise I would still be riding the M8.

That is what I was hoping to hear. I really want a yamaha and I'd like to stick with that amazing genesis triple, I just want a better handling machine. I did a lot of research on mods for the nytro but if the high engine mounting is part of the problem, there's not much one can do about that. It drives fine on the trails, but I like to get out in powder and I really want a sled that's more nimble. Sounds like the viper fits the bill. Thanks again!
