Ok, I am tired of the idiot light and decided to install a standard 2" mechanical gauge. Could a guy install the sending unit into the thermostat housing rather than installing a Tee in the coolant line?

What would happen when the light sender is removed? Would the CPU think something is up or would it not know?s

Any thoughts?

i would also like to know this or would it be posible to just splice into the stock sender there are 2 wires coming from it so one would be the low temp and one for the high. i was thinking you could splice into one of these this way you would have a much cleaner install

I would think that you could test the stock sender by measuring resistance (or voltage?) with a multi-meter as the sled warms up. You should either see:

A) A gradual change because it is measuring actual temperature

B) No change because it is set to close the circuit at the overheat temperature.

As shown in the 'gage color' thread a few days ago I used a generic gage and bought a splice kit all for about $70 and it wasn't too hard to install.

If you take the OEM sender out, you will get an error that may shut you off.

If you parallel the OEM sender with another, then the accuracy of the circuit is degraded, possibly to the point that the sled will shut down. Also, I believe the original post was for a mechanical sending unit. It is not possible to tie this into any electrical circuit.

Best bet is to insert a Tee in the 1" rubber line exiting the top of the engine, just before the Thermostat housing. You have to be careful to get a tee that will allow you to insert the primary element w/o bottoming in the tee.

I made one up from a metal 1" underground sprinkler system coupling and welded 1/2 of a 1/8" coupling to it. The 1" coupling is very thin and does not add any resistance to the coolant circuit. But you do have to file off the galvanize coating before you weld.

I was looking at one at a parts store on the weekend. The price was right but it was a mechanical sensor. I would be worried about having to run that line down the hood and along the hinge point. I think the open and closing would eventually break the capillary. Electric would be the way to go.

Just thought I would throw that out there for anyone shopping and putting it beside the speedo.

CHECK OUT MOUNTAIN PERFORMCE WEB SITE THEY SELL A DAYTONA GAUGE I PUT ONE ON MY VIPER AND IM ORDERING ONE NOW FOR MY RX1. THEY ARE EASY TO INSTALL AND WORK GREAT AND AS A BONUS YOU GET A CLOCK ON YOU SLED!
