WATER TEMP SENDING UNIT.(LOCATION)

I know this subject on water temp gauges has been beat up,but please forgive me on this question.... where is the best place to locate the tee fitting ? The thread on TY says one location and others say that the hose coming up under the thermostat housing is better.please help as im installing a gauge this week. Thanks
 
In the flex-hose coming from the head to the thermostat housing, I installed a cut down metal 1" underground sprinkling system coupling with a 1/8" half-coupling welded to it. I cut the 1" coupling down so the total length was ~ 3" long. That gave me enough metal to get two sealing ridges in the flex-hose, on both ends. Then I used a 1" SS Hose clamp on each end. Right out of the head is the best place on my sled. I have the Block Heater in below the thermostat housing. Even without the heater, I still think right out of the head is the best place.

The only thing you have to watch for is getting all the galvinizing off the 1" coupling aroung the area where you weld the 1/8" half coupling on. Galvinizing screws up the weld. If you have trouble with an arc weld, you can just braze over any rough spots or leaks.

I looked at a lot of different fittings out there before I did this. I am glad that I did. Some of the Pics of what some of us have used would have made me a bit nervious if I put them on my machine.

the pic that srxspec is showing is the fitting that i am using(thanks srx),so do you agree that is the right place to mount it?
 
i need one of those billet aluminum water temp splices . i already mounted a guage and ran all the wires last year at the end of the season. i just didn't have a place to tee into...great tip!!

I could not use the billet Tee. My 1/8" NPT sensor would not would fit in it. If I recall, my sensor was too long for the billet Tee. You may want to make sure you know what size (NPT thread and sensor length) sensor you are using and match it up. Last year, I called on that one in the pic. I think it was for a certain digital sensor, which was shorter than any analog one I could find. Of course, maybe this year they have diferent size fittings, etc.? But it seems to me that you need at least one-half of an 1/8" coupling's height to get a normal sensor in without hitting the other side of the fitting.
