My son and I made a deal with a dealer on a new pair of RX-1's. Mine is an '05 RX-1ER, and his a holdover '03 RX-1 with a new Ripsaw track.

Picking them up the day after Christmas and headed for NW WI to ride for a week. I can't wait!!!

We've never bought new sleds before and I have a question on the '03. What updates would you all recommend and of those, would Yamaha be expected to pay for any? (ex: any "recall" type stuff?)

Thanks!
Bob

Congarts! The kid has the 03, I wouldn't worry about any of the updates...........

LMAO!

On *BOTH* of them you want better skis... Simmons.
On the 03, get the swaybar, links, and swaybar bushings for 04/05, get 130 lb/inch springs for the front end - the existing ones are multi-rate and go squirrly in corners, 130 is harder (translate: better) than 05 springs, which have to be set with too much preload and end up sitting high off the ground. Also, read this http://www.rx1.info/viewtopic.php?t=2774 for 03 suspension setup.

But what about any Yamaha updates? ie, are all updates on the owner or were there some dealer provided updates while under Warranty?

Thanks again

There weren't any from the factory. Only updates were for handling improvements. Many guys left the sled alone and rode it.

The rubber hood 'bumpers' by the steering post? I think that may have been a dealer update on the 03s.

The other dealer updates that I know of were specific to mountain sleds (rivets on the tunnel and the float bowls are the two I can think of)

Oh yeah, the rubber bumpers and rivet in the tunnel. Make sure the dealer address both.

The dealer upgraded the '03 leftover to the ripsaw track for $350.

I see lots of posts about upgrading to "longer links" and a bigger swaybar. Is this a dealer item or an aftermarket? Where would I find them and how much for them?

Yamaha does "updates" so expect to pay for them as parts or installed in a new sled, even tho the '03 RX-1 was a first-run "filler" sled. It should be interesting to be able to see the side-by-side comparison between the 2.

I'll feel sorry for your son if you let him ride your '05.

Here are the updates my dealer did for me: Put bumpers on screws under hood, new instruement lense (fogging up), Drilled out two rivets on tunnel and replaced seat cover (small tear near rivet), replace spark plug caps which are on back order, air box mod (breather hose).
