Four guys left Ottawa for Val Dor two guys driving 2014 Viper RTX with 5000 km. we bought them new. We unloaded in Temiscaming drove to Ville Marie and my muffler in my 2014 Viper blew and melted my panel and belly pan then melted the two oil lines and oil puked out on my foot and I shut it down Asap. Four hours later and 700 dollars later a new muffler and back on the trail to Rouyn Noranda. Get up Friday morning and my buddies 2014 Viper starter pucked metal in motor and his stator and flywheel done and metal in the motor......his sled is down and out for 2-3 weeks and at dealer in Rouyn Noranda. They were awesome to us but I said screw this I traded my Viper right then and there and went back to my faithful Apex that I have been driving since 2006. I bought a brand new 2016 Apex XTX 1.75 and never looked back I should have never tried the Viper what a piece of crap...

My question is I want to add a 2 inch riser but do I need to add cable extensions.

Last note if your ever in Villa Marie please stay at the Auberge Ville Marie near the QPP station new owners are awesome and service and food incredible. Owners Guy and Agnes were amazing and a true embassador for snowmobiling.

No cable extensions were need to put a 2" one on my 16 apex xtx

That's a blow of a weekend! I have been thinking of going the Viper route... Tried it out dint like it, read about it, dint like what I read. I will save my dollars and keep driving my high mileage Apex, never let me down, owes me nothing, has towed numerous Ski Doos over the years!

Sucks man....congrats on the new sled though! We lost 3 sleds to break downs this weekend also. Sucks when things go like that.

I rode another Viper again this past week. I like the seating position and it corners flatter but that's where it ends! Apex is much smoother with a lot less vibration. And still can't beat the power steering and SnowTrackers!! I stand back and look at the two and the viper just is not a Yamaha. Also hit 17 mpg with the Turbo again!

Sorry for your bad luck....
I think that someday I may want a Viper, then I hear stories like this....

Had the starter issue in 2014 and I wasn't going to wait for the muffler to come apart in the middle of the season so I replaced the can with the MBRP can in season 2 of the Viper now I just updated the clutch with the big venom kit and so far I really like it. But I refuse to let my 2006 Apex go as it just runs on and on like the energizer bunny, yeah have had to do the usual pipe gaskets and cracked swing arm along with shock rebuild and shock dual rate spring upgrade but everytime i ride it a smile comes over my face...

Sounds like weekend turned out good in the end with the purchase of the Apex! I have the same machine. How do you like it so far? What is your rear shock set at?

So I currently have both an Apex and Viper. Agree with kviper on the seating position and flat cornering and mine is boosted to 190hp so loving the power but it just doesn't have near the quality of a Yamaha sled. I'm just waiting for one of these ugly starter failures that so many Viper owners seem to be having. For now I'll be keeping both. Next time around I'll most likely trade in the Apex for a new one, maybe a long track or whatever Japanese sled they come out with to replace the Apex.

That's a crazy story. I have two friends: one with a AC 7000 and one with a 14 Viper. Both have had their exhaust bottoms burn out and cause damage. Apparently this is now a a known problem by AC and that the supplier of the mufflers was not building them from proper material. The results of this can be massively problematic.

I agree that this level of quality is unacceptable.
The only OEM that takes reliability serious is Yamaha (not AC).

I thought about apex until I read all the bad stuff on here....funny how we all just hear the bad....

I don't know if its all bad. I like to think of it as awareness.

I spoke to my dealer last year about the exhaust from my friends AC story and he had never heard of it, accused that sled of being sunk for such a thing to happen. Now apparently its out, that the material used is some was inferior. How would we know this stuff if there wasn't communication.

Apex has some flaws but they are fairly easy to remedy or deal with. Go on any brand specific forum and you will hear guys complaining about ALL of them and how they are all piles of crap. Main thing is to do good PM and go on here to discover all the little tricks...

Seems the snowmobiling season is getting shorter n shorter every year and to have problem were your sled is down 2-3 weeks SUCKS. Tried the vector thing one year and I weared after that I would never have anything else but a APEX.
