Hit the trails for the first time this weekend. In the off season I put in Ulmer's Trail #4 kit in the sled and switched to the 8DN belt. Last season I saw 82mph as my top end, so I had Allen switch out the clutch kit, add the intake kit, put in a can..............any guesses what the top end was this year............a whopping 85mph@9050rpm.
While it didn't take long to get there, it wouldn't go any higher and I held it there for at least a mile. I have to be missing something considering the reports that I have read here. I will be on the phone with Ulmer's this week, but without adding another $5000 what do I have to do to see the mid-90's?

Look at the "post your clutch setups" sticky. Try my Ulmer setup. Most important I am coming to realize is take your clutches off and clean them soap and water and stiff scrub brush. Remove plate on primary and take apart secondary. It can be done on sled also but I like to soak them or sneak them into dishwasher. I believe initial torque is 85 ft lbs and then 45 ft lbs once seated. Check manual.

Gets the belt and even brake dust out so they dont stick. I have always done this. Just thought everyone else did also.

If you ran an 8jp belt and had belt dust it impregnates the primary clutch bushings and really binds them up. Our first Viper I ran the 8jp about 50 miles and had to do this. Easy check though, remove belt and primary cover and spring and see if you can push the outer sheave in and out by hand without binding. If it moves freely great, but if you can't push it in by hand it needs attention.

I think I only ran the 8JP for 10 or less miles. My clutch seems to be a little sticky, but it did that since brand new, 0.0 miles and 0.0 hours. Moves freely but it'll stay in place if you stop and won't drop down under its own weight. Like I said, since brand new.
