Well its official. Goodby Polaris...Hello Yamaha! I just returned from ordering an 05 RX-1ER. Needless to say I'm very excited.
The dealer informed me of the extended warranty available -YES- and it sounds like a good deal. Any real world experiences w/ it? I know it excludes normal wear items but does it cover things like idler wheels, clutch bushings, rod ends? Does anybody NOT recommend it and why? Have you found it to increase your resale value?
Thanks.

extended warrantee

Buy the extended warrantee thru the dealer. Unlike past years, the extended warrantee is negociable with the dealer and he can give a better deal than dealing straight thru yammie. Price for extended is almost half that which yammie sells directly. It also must somehow fatten the wallet of the dealer so it can't hurt to make that guy happy with you either.

Not sure if the extended w. will increase value, but it sure won't hurt to know that if something goes wrong it is covered short of abuse and routine maint. items. Everything is covered that should work, and doesn't get broken cause you did something wrong. My dealer says the lugs on the track are not covered on my Mountain. So remember to take it easy on that when you get it stuck.

Hi Piped -
Welcome. I do not think you will ever want to go back but allot has to do with the dealer you buy from and use for service. I have owned Yamahas now for a bit over 20 years. I have had 2 that had fairly expensive internal engine issues but Yamaha took care of it in all cases - sometimes beyond the 'official' warranty period. I am not sure they are as generous anymore but I think they still have a strong committment to customer satisfaction and will do the right thing if there is no sign of abuse.

When I ordered my '04 Warrior about this time last year I had the same decision as you. My dealer sweatened the deal a bit and offered another $100 off if I purchased prior to my scheduled p/u date. The prices were pretty steep: 2yr was about $570; 3yr $670; and 4yr $770 (prices BEFORE discount). I had just finished the warranty on a machine that came with the 'free' 3yr warranty and hadn't had total claims over about $180. In the end, I decided against it. I know, I know, a MAJOR failure of engine or drivetrain would be worth it but in most cases IF these happen, Yamaha views it as a gross exception and will sometimes do a "goodwill adjustment" that makes you whole. They occasionally have a small design issue that will affect many owners and they will usually make it good.
Bottom line is the Y.E.S is allot of money even though it also offers the trip protection, etc. I guess it is like most insurance: they are betting you won't use it and you are betting that you will - and enough so as to at least get all your money back. I think you will loose most of it. As an example, another fellow RX-1 owner and Vermont resident just posted what he replaced over the course of almost 11,000 miles (ALL DURING THIS SEASON!). It wasn't all stuff that would be covered and the price of the parts was probably $300. (He had a track fail and I think it was goodwilled but ordinairily be covered.)

Just my opinion.

YES has saved me tons of cash

I have an 02 Viper that I am selling. I got the extended warranty thrown in when I bought it. Yamaha has replaced three engines under the warranty, two of them had crank replacements. They also replaced the fuel pump and oil pump and have reimbursed me over $400 in sled rental fees. The first engine melt down was due to a crimped oil line from the factory, that would have cost me $1500.00. The second was due to loose carb boots from the previous rebuild. This time the motor had 5000 miles on it, the crank was bad, so they replaced that as well. That build would have cost ~$2500-3000.00. The final build was due to a faulty oil pump and again they replaced the crank, but this time the entire top end and cases as well as new power valves. This build would have cost me over $3600.00. The sled sits in the garage now all brand new and Yamaha has extended my extended warranty until March of 05 so I can break in the new motor. Sooooooooooo, I think the $500 for 2 addtl years of warranty (rather like insurance) are worth every penny. I am going to order a new RX1 ER in the next couple of weeks and will be negotiating some extended warranty into the deal.

There is a dealer from Wisconsin that sells the 48 month extended warranty on ebay for $569 all the time. My first job under the extended warranty was the jackshaft/bearing fix which would have cost me around $800-900 out of my pocket. The jack shaft alone is almost $500. I plan on keeping my sled for a long time and I still have 45 months left to the warranty, so I think it is well worth it.

Personally I think it depends on the dealer. I bought my warrior this time last year and the dealer offered it, but didn't push it or anything and actually said it wasn't really worth it. In some rare cases it would be, but overall if there is a major problem, yamaha will usually cover it even outside the warranty time frame.

My buddy is the first person I have heard of to lose a RX-1 motor. 4 strokes are expensive I can not tell you how much other than it is under warranty they are taking care of it. This includes Rering new lower end main and rod bearings crank etc basically a new motor.

I bought the 4 additional years (5 total) when I got my 03 ER shorty for $500. 2500 miles and have not needed it. But, I still have 3 years of peace of mind. For $100 a year, it is cheap, IMO. I have used it in the past on my 97 VMax. Yamaha is very good about standing behind it.

piped800xc, First off, howdy neighbor, and welcome to the Yamaha family. I personally like the extended warranty for piece of mind, not to mention the possible cost savings. Who did you buy your sled from? You should have until December 1st 2005 to purchase it. You should be able to purchase 4 extra years for around $500. Port Yamaha had a special last year for that amount, and I know my local dealer will match it. Seems to make it easier to sell a used sled if it is under warranty and maybe gets you a few extra dollars.

Etended Warranty

I got a 4 year plan on my Warrior for $478. from my dealer. Great piece of mind !! I don't think you can go wrong by purchasing it.
Also congrads on your new toy ... you won't be sorry. Awesome sled !!!!!

me and 3 of my friends bought 4 rx1's 2003 models.2 bought the yes plan 2 did not.we all have about 4500-4800 miles.both guys with the yes plan are having track issues.yamaha said sorry we dont do tracks yes or no yes plan.one of the guys with the yes plan was popping headlight fuses,we went to a dealer in st,goerge quebec.turned out some wires were chaffed and shorting out.dealer said sorry that yes warranty is no good in canada.turned out there was a bulletin from yamaha on this.i wuold not buy the yes plan.

I bought the Y.E.S plan but fortunately have not had to use it yet. As the plan states, it will cover major components but not wear items. As far as the track, Yamaha will not warranty a track if it is studded but will warranty it if it is resulting damage from somthing else such as if a control rod breaks and shreds the track. Keep in mind any mods will sacrifice warranty though.

I had a 02 viper with the 3 year warranty and they fixed two problems FOR FREE.. and Replaced the hood when it cracked (they did charge me for installation but well worth it)

ITS A GOOD DEAL!!

I guess I was treated pretty good by my dealer. I only paid $400 for four extra years on my 03 shorty. Used that and then some the first year. This year I've only had the two relay rods break which was $99 parts and labor. Still covered under warranty :D

Well, looks like there is good and bad to this one. Some like it, some don't. If I can get the dealer down some I'll probably get the four years. Thanks for all the answers.

Hello roadrunner. Good to have input from a local rider. I bought from Bob Weaver Motorsport. He comes off as a pretty good guy. We shall see. Where did you buy from and how do they treat you? Can I come over during the off season to listen to your sled until mine comes in?
I really don't see a lot of RX-1s around here. Do you ride with any others?
