What did the RX1 Mountain Weigh stock?

I was curious if the new Apex MTX was much lighter then the original RX1. I think they list mine at 596 pounds........

Just kidding but I think they were closer to 700lbs then 600lbs.

I don't have the manual handy but, Yamaha was very optimistic on their factory weight guestimate they advertised and the weight they put in the manual.

well then I guess they only dropped less then 20 pounds on the Apex, not as much as I thought, not impressive......
 
My 2003 RX-1 service manual list the Mountain version at just 588.7lbs. That does not show what is included or not but I am sure that is dry weight and the battery weighs just 11lbs.

 
now im really confused, i didn't think they could be lighter then the apex mountain, especially with the read skid they had.......
 
The 611 number came from Specialty Sleds as they hung a brand new 03 from the scale. It might have had oil in it I don't remember, but it really just doesn't matter, they all weigh a ton. Personnaly I'm resigned to the fact that Yamaha doesn't know how to build a light sled and never will. I buy them for the motor and thats it, everything else goes out the door when I mod them. My Vmax was a tank, my SRX's were tanks, RX1 total tank, even my Nytro was a pig out of the box.

Maybe I was thinking of wet weights but, I do remember some on the forum claiming it to be awfully close to 700 lbs.

I never have weighed my sled (maybe that's a good thing).

I seem to remember the 2004 claimed a weight loss of somewhere between 15 and 20 lbs. They went to a magnesium chain case cover and a titianium exhaust.

I'm sure what you are looking for is out there.

That was 05 I have an 04 mountain not magnesium.
 
Yamaha claimed a 30 lb weight loss from 03 to 05. The 05 had a different skid, Ti exhaust pipes, different brake setup, aluminum upper A-arms, magnessium chaincase cover and valve cover for a total of 30 lbs over the 03. I believe from 04 to 05 it was 22 lbs. It was still a pig, but a pig with a good motor. LOL

Yamaha in there great wisdom put there normal no good trail riding skis on the 03 and 04 mountains as well. The sleds are not light to begin with so they ploughed through the snow instead of ride on top like the 05's did with the new mountain skis they finally put on. That was a bad move on Yamaha's part to introduce a heavy sled like that call it a mountian sled with garbage skis on it. That is where the nickname one ton came from.
 
Well, I have an 05 that has been modified somewhat, and I was shocked to find out that after loads of cash and time it still weighed over 600# with 5 gallons of gas on board. Mine has Timbersled front and rear suspension, lightweight dry battery, excell exhaust, aluminum a arm bolts, mountain mod seat, I cut the cast aluminum muffler tub out of the tunnel, and am running the exhaust under tunnel, Ski doo skiis and 2" lightweight track, only the rear skid wheels are in, I removed the swaybar.........I think thats it, the only weight I added was the MPI blower, which they claim 5 over stock I believe. I honestly expected to see 550, maybe 575, but it came in at 608, with like I said 5 gallons in it. Somewhat dissapointing but it goes like stink and hauls my big but thru the powder so in the end I guess it was worth it, I just wish it was a little lighter........ :dunno: #$%&*
 
So 700 lbs wet stock was well within reason.

I know mine is no light weight but, man can it take a hit without issues. I have been accused of logging while boondocking but, the old girl always seems to come back unscathed.

So, where is the line between lightweight and durability? BPR is wondering the same thing?

I think Polaris has it figured out with the IQ. I've not read much of anything about chassis issues. Seems like they are tough yet reasonably light.

Too bad about the XP. For instance, take the '08 TNT 121 MX-Z. It was advertised as 399 lbs dry and I read it actually came in a few pound lighter. That's great, except for it to hold together for hard ditch banging it needs all the race sled braces. The '08 RS 600 race sled came in at around 425 or 430 lbs, same weight as the '07 Rev race sled with a 440 motor.

I'm all for making things lighter, but I also need a sled that will hold up. I think the next design break through should be offering a sled that is physically smaller. Sleds have just increased in size over the years and an easy way to drop weight is to make it smaller. I'm thinking along the lines of the original Phazer, it was a small sled.Seems like you could package the suspension components to offer modern travel numbers yet still keep the sled small.
