I've got 3500 miles on my 03 RX1...Belt still looks great...I measured the width and it seems about the same as my new one. Just read a post where someones belt broke at 3200 miles...Question should I change it? Do they fail without showing wear first? Can they cause damage when they let go? Engine suddenly over reving things like that...

The engine has a limiter at 11500 rpm. Don't worry about that. As to the possibility of causing OTHER damage on belt blow, not likely. If you were to have a notch disintegration, it could slam your clutches. It won't hurt you or your hood because the belt guard will stop it first.
Keep monitoring your belt for wear. If there are any CRACKS between the LUGS, it is a sign that it may fail.

I haven't heard of any belt failures yet.

- Which one? I have 6
I've never had a belt go on a Yammaha. Polaris belts , though, in the past have cost me a lot of money.

Smokey, my belt failed at about 3200mi. It was still within spec as far as wear. When it went, the outer layer came completely off and there were chunks of it all over the place, along with lots of fuzz. It made a big bang, and I felt a bump when it went, so my first thought was that a big chunk of ice had gone through the track or something. I dont think you could get one to snap completely in half the way they are made.
Any way, look for cracks between the lugs like LB said, check the wear, and keep your spare handy!

I blew my belt at 2100 miles. It totally delaminated. This was the first belt failure that I have ever had on a Yamaha.

I have had only one belt explode in my entire riding career...1988 Indy 650...What a mess...including a bent belt cover....With that kind of mileage I would consider giving your girl a fresh belt....that one will make a good spare for towing Polaris’s (kidding)

I have 5,500 miles on my 03, still using the original belt. Belt looks great, but will probably change for peace of mind.

Change it just for peace of mind and keep the old one as a spare
