So far I've used a couple on Yamaha sleds. Last year I pulled a clutch from my father-in-law's SRX and we used the puller he got off eBay. A no name unit that was like $20.
We popped the clutch off and we found that the puller had a tweek in it and was slightly bent maybe a degree and a half from being loaded during removal.
Tonight, I got my puller in the mail from Dennis Kirk, popped the clutch off my Apex and noticed the same thing. The puller has a little tweek in it.
My polaris P-85 puller is stout as can can be and appears to be made from a much harder metal. It has never bent.
I figure there must be a good puller that will stand up to occaisonal use and not break the bank too bad. I paid $18 for mine on Dennis Kirk and maybe I got what I paid for. I figure maybe I can use it a couple more times and then I'll be nervous that it may break off while being used.
I see Port Yamaha sells a CMP puller for about $40. Anyone know if that one is a good one?
Thanks.

That's the one I have, and I use it every 500 miles to pull and clean them.

Thanks for the info. I'll be going shopping for a better one soon enough.
Sounds like they're not all like mine.

For about $10.00 in cost, i wouldn't want to gamble with a cheap puller screwing up my clutch, or possibly crank?

SPI makes good, stout pullers. About $35.

I'll probably go with the CMP unit from Port Yamaha since the price is right and they are right in my backyard.
I think that the pullers for Polaris clutches stand up to more abuse becuase they have the same diameter for the entire tool.
The Yamaha pullers that I have seen bend, both bent in the same spot, where the diameter steps down. This must be where the higher quality tool stands apart from the cheaper ones.

My SPI puller looks identical to the CMP puller. Prob made at the same factory in China somewhere. Lol! Actually, that is a sad truth.....

That would be disappointing. Dennis Kirk even says in the description for the CMP puller (#8000-4000) that it is made in the USA

I know, SPI claims to be made in USA also. It's hard to find North American made products these days! The only countries I want to buy from are USA and Canada.
Of course, this from a guy who drives a Tundra (but made in USA!) and a slew of Yamaha sleds and ATV's.

Wow 500 miles, I would have been pulling mine mid day last weekend. The Polaris model is definently stronger from a design standpoint. But if you grease the end as well as the threads, a good quality unit should hold up. I know theysay to not use an impact but I will load the puller and give it a rap with a hammer. Usually prevents having to tighten the holy heck out of it, plus it no supprise when it lets go.

I like to keep them clean and this way I can fine things before they get bad. Lol
