Why does lower total force primary spring allow more top end

Well, I suppose that there is a balance between overall belt squeeze (limiting slippage), and limiting FRICTION. The harder you squeeze that belt, the more power it sucks up to pull the belt out of the clutch.

Just a guess. Not that I've actually observed a lighter spring giving higher top speed.

Is the spring wire smaller in diamater? If it is, the force would compress it smaller, leaving the belt to climb higher in the clutch, giving a lower gear ratio. More speed with same RPM.

Yes LB, I can see that it would require more H.P. to overcome a stronger spring. But that stronger spring is also allowing you to throw more weight a the primary. Honestly, I think the entire thing is a wash. I had just seen several posts where guys had said they got higher top end with a weaker spring and I just couldn't for the life of me figure it out. Thnaks for getting me as close as probabaly anyone could ever come. Powder Blue

Testing

I agree. I spent all my time this winter with PB's theory of throwing more weight at the primary. I think this works better for acceleration. I finally put in a setup with less weight and a lighter spring, but never got back out on the lake to test it because of the weather and the ice became un safe. Now by the time next year comes I should have the turbo on and that will be a whole new experience.

DanG Buckeye, That close to proving me a Genius and it all went by the wayside :) Some times I wonder if it's true too but my "Buttometer" says the sled accelerates harder. Maybe it needs to go in for calibration, maybe not? Powder Blue

Hey PB. We will definitely have to do a lot more testing next year to get this genius theory of yours down. I can't wait.

Me neither "J". Did you schedule your sled for a paint job yet? You KNOW your sled will be even faster bathed in the stunning Yamaha blue :) There's a couple of Mountain Vipers that have us in their sights for next season. I plan to do all I can to make sure the sights are on them and not us! The "Genius" thing? I'm over it now. It was just a passing thought from watching too much Jimmy Neutron with the kids. With hc u need a spring change to trail ride this set up,other wise u have to much belt heat, slippage, thats part of the reason i use heavier rate springs up front w/hc plus team out back. :o

Tell your viper friends they had better paint their sleds black to even come close to us. And why they are at it put a coat on your sled. HA!HA! We definitely need to come up with something to kick the vipers A#$. We also have to show that RMK something. We can't have that happen again.

"J", I still have nightmares about that RMK :( I also remember from that trip running ski to ski with that 700 SX short track for a 1/4 mile with the Bender big bore motor, Heel clickers and a whole host of other tricks. I thought I really had something until that damned RMK came out there and spanked all of us. It must have been a fluke? Right? I need to get the Dalton stuff from you sometime soon. Dale can't stay patient forever. PB

Hey powder if that rmk spanked u as u say,r u sure he was stock,my x dealer has what looks like stock xc800 but kicks everyones butt cause hes moded out plus the JUICE helps lol.

I have no idea. The guy with the 700SX said "they all run like that" so we assumed this guys sled was stock. I was quite tickled to run ski to ski with a short track hoped up 700 on my 151 x2" mountain sled. I need to employ some tricks for next season. Got any?

I don't think that RMK was stock. From the sounds of it the current owner bought it from someone who knew how to take care of sleds if you know what I mean. He had it tuned in pretty good. Sorry about the Dalton stuff. You probably won't let me try anything again. I will try to get out there this weekend and get it to you. I am helping at the aid station during blooms day but should be able to come out after that. Will you be home Sunday afternoonish? Let me know.
