Would you run this secondary?

07 Apex GT, 11,000 miles. Original sheaves.

We've all heard of old clutches that grenade, how about these clutches?

Yes I would mostly them came from the molding process and have been for a long time.

Agreed, some of those imperfections appear to be tooling parting lines & some are surface imperfections from when the casting cooled faster on the surface, a normal situation that doesn't weaken the casting (enough to worry about anyway). The clutch looks ok IMO.

You guys are only seeing the casting marks and not the cracks.

I believe that is what the OP is talking about?

Imo, and I am far from being a clutch guru, is I wouldn't unless I had it checked out personally by someone who was.

I looked again very closely, I don't see any cracks, I see:
A: Parting / tooling lines from the mold.
B: Imperfections from surface cooling.

Run it! I have seen these on clutches for many years....just casting flaws from the mold. They are most every sled mad today.

I'll take your word for it but those labelled "B" sure look like cracks to me.

can you get a feeler gauge or something in those crack? did you take the clutch apart to see the other side or remove that adjusting bolt to see if it goes into the thread area? if it was me i would sand those to see if they go away. I would think those are not cracks but casting marks as others mentioned. if they are actual cracks then this would be the first that i have ever heard of a yamaha secondary having that problem. some guys, including me on my 98 SRX have had stress cracks on the primary but never the secondary.

If you look close at the B so called crack by the shiv adjuster bolt's you will see by the shoulder of the bolt that the crack does not go further than the surface.

Just to make ya feel better...Take a file or sand papper and file down or smooth out one of the marks or flaws...It will disappear not showing what would appear to be a "crack". I did this years ago and many secondarys ago..no issues.

I would run it, I would keep an eye on the pnes that you think are cracks but as stated they look like imperfections from the molding process. I noticed these marks on mine also.

Run it there in no problem with that clutch just needs to be cleaned up..

I'll try sanding the surface to see if any go into the casting at all this coming weekend when I'm with the sled.
I did have the clutch apart replacing ramps and spring. none of the lines go right through.

Looks like I'll be running it and keeping a close eye on it.
