I just went into the local Yamaha dealer to pick up a plastic windshield screw and metal plate holding part of the guage pod together (part # 5PW-2177L-00-00). I walked out of the dealership with $7.69 less in my pocket. Is it me, or does it seem like robbery when they charge $2.57 for a 2 cent windshield screw? Granted, I paid the prices because I needed the items but next time I'll be careful not to overtighten the screws and the plate is getting glued or RV siliconed in place.

I could have probably picked up a dozen regular screws for the same price, and if it happens again that is what I will do. Seeing as though I only needed one I thought I could get one at the dealer at a reasonable price. I was wrong.

It's been better than a decade and a half since I worked for a yamaha dealer. Back then, for repair/replacement parts, dealer cost was exactly 1/2 of the list price, which most dealers I have dealt with try to sell their stuff at. I have good reason to believe their pricing structure is exactly the same today.
Granted, parts and service is where most dealers make the most profit, I have always been flabberghasted by the rediculous Yamaha list prices. This goes for other manufacturers as well. It's just not you that feels like they are getting robbed.
I won't stirr up a hornest nest on this site or any other by saying what my cost is, but my local dealer does give me a very reasonable discount on parts. If you are on good terms with your dealer and/or have been a repeat customer, you may be able to negotiate some % off of the list price or whatever price they are selling stuff to you at. I would think it is worth a try.
Keep in mind I have bought ten new machines from my local dealer since 1999 and used equipment before that. I have sent several referrals to them as well that have resulted in sales.

My brother works for a Yamaha outboard dealership, and as long as the part is in the fiche he can get it at cost. I didn't figure a plate and a screw were worth the hassle of having him order the parts, but next time that is the route I will take. Even at dealer cost (if it is exactly half) the price for a plastic screw seems outrageous.
On a brighter note, looks like Chisholm is due for some snow, along with most of the rest of the state!

Not that I am sticking up for the pricing but when I have to buy something I always look at it this way....
"what would it have cost me to make one" not Yamaha but me myself...
carve A plastic screw sometime and see how long it takes you and then divide it by what you think you are worth per hour... It usually makes me feel better LOL

I went to the local shop trying to locate some vintage parts for an old diaphram style carb.
I needed the glass tube and tiny black rubber cap for it ( necessary to adjust the float level )
They wanted over $3.00 for that black cap that looks like it shouldn't cost more than 49 cents.
and the glass float level wasnt even available.

I always seem to lose the fairing bolts on my bike. They are special allen head twist on's. They go for $13.50 from Yamaha Robbery indeed. They seem to be going to those specialty parts on all their product, they give you no choice but to go to them.

I bet you that $7.69 part in the U.S. is over $10 in Canada, anybody want to look it up?

for what it is worth, I think I would keep the plastic bolts in it. I went over the hood after hitting a rock a week ago and took the windshield with me. The windshield survived, but only because the heads of the plastic bolts all sheared off. Cheaper to buy the bolts than the $85 or so windshield. To bad the a-arms and bulkhead didn't have a cheap break away system. WTF $2200 later and back on the snow. Almost makes the insurance premium worth paying.

Re: parts
I would have been tempted to drive down to the states and pick one up for that price difference. Sioux Lookout isn't that long of a trek down

I just had to buy the bolt that connects the lower a-arm to the spindle housing. That and the two plastic bushings $15.00.. How is that for being outragious? Plus the closest yami dealer is a 45 minute drive oneway. So I figured it cost me close to $20-25 for a bolt
