I agree that if the drive clutch is not clean then it could be grabbing regardless of the idle rpm. I use a scotch brite pad and soapy water to clean any residual belt grime from the clutches. I suppose improper (tight) chain tension in the transmission could also cause hard shifting...

Turning the idle down helps too. I have mine set so that when the engine is all warmed up, it idles really low which keeps pressure off the belt so the gears do not have much pressure on them.

I just turned 6000 miles on the '08 VK and no problems with the studs or the single protector. I should mention that the small studs are only about 1/4" above the paddle so they must be 1 1/2" picks. This works ok ice but not as well as other sleds with 1 3/4" picks on 1 1/4" paddle tracks...

The Skidoo Expedition 600 etec is just over 600 pounds. The 4-stroke version is 60 pounds heavier. My VK is 750 or so. Big difference in handling and the lighter sled is much better in deep snow conditions. For pulling a groomer or large sled, the 4-strokes shine.
