My Yamaha Viking had a no start issue this past weekend.

Weather was not cold (near freezing).

Here is what happened: When I turned the key nothing. I checked the wires and moved stuff. Kill switch up and down etc. Still nothing. Once I heard a click sound. The sound was Coming from the fuse/relay section under the air box on the left side. See the picture attached. Turn the key on time and it starts. This happened 3 times over the weekend. Sometimes I would turn the machine off after riding and go to start it a couple minutes later and it would not start. Wait and it starts.

When I was moving and looking at the wires nothing looked loose. I couldn’t find the starter so couldn’t check for a lose wire at the starter.

Any ideas?

Terry

It sounds like a bad relay. I have not had this issue with my '08 VK but it happens all the time to my wife's '07 Renegade. I carry spare relays and was glad I had them at the start of the season. Tried to start...nothing. Then I heard a click so I swapped relays and voila...started up. No further issues this season.

How old is your machine? sounds like battery problem. Have you ever drained the battery& not recharge it because it will then freeze & take the life out of it.

Machine is at 2007 and I changed the battery last year. I'll put it on a charger and make sure the battery is fully charged.

I was thinking the Relay as I know the Phazer's and other Yamaha machine has relay issues, I just have not read about the Viking's having any issues.

I have owned 2 vk pros 06 and 08> had a similar problem with the 06 and it was the regulator. Under the rubber flap in front of air intake which is located in the nose of sled you will see the regulator which has 2 connectors on it. After I had the problem fixed I would take apart connectors every once in awhile and coat withe dialectic grease. There was some sort of recall on this as they did it on my o8> One thing to watch for is that this rubber flap in the nose of sled should always be kept in place to keep snow of regulator to prevent corrosion.
Stupid place to put it anyway IMO

Your picture shows the starter relay and it's probably the source of your problems. It looks very similar to the one on my Nytro which means it likely suffers from the same issue. Mine started acting up this season after 8500KM. In a pinch (if you can reach them), you can jump the two big terminals with a pair of pliers, with your key in run, and the sled should start.

In my picture, that would be the terminal I'm pointing at and the one right beside it.
