I just got back from riding the Dusty Trails ATV trails in Oconto Co. in Wisconsin and I had a problem with my 03 Kodiak 450 that has never happened before. I was running at about 35 mph down a gravel road for about 2 miles when the engine stopped running. I had 1/3 of a tank of gas at the time so I switched on the reserve, but it still would not start. I checked the air box and looked all around the atv and I saw nothing out of place. I was getting ready to hook up the tow line to my wifes polaris and I figured I would try to start it again, and it fired up.
I spoke to my dealer and he thought I might have had a vapor lock problem.
Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Thanks for your help.

hmmm
did you try the vent tube for the gas tank? or vent lol im too used to the old ones. you had to watch them when you put the cap on so you didn't crimp the tube off. with the tube crimped off almost no fuel gets down to the carb. has happened to all my relatives bikes at some point :ORC hope you post the problems solution so the rest of us know what to do when it happens

Thanks to everyone who replied.
The engine spins normally and the coolant light did not come on. I felt around the engine and radiator and it did not seem to be overheating.
I also checked the coolant overflow bottle and it was normal.
This morning I removed the gas tank and checked the fuel filters on the fuel petcock and they were clean. I also cleaned the air filter, although it was not very dirty. When I re-installed the fuel tank I insulated the fuel line and zip tied it away from the engine. My next step will be to check the gas cap vent tube.
Thanks again,
The Rattler

I have no idea what the time frame was when this event occured, but if you switched it over to reserve it may take it some time to refil the floatbowl if the flow rate is not up to par.
Have you checked the flow? If it is slow, there could be debris at the petcock strainer.
To simulate the same thing again for a reference point, you could just close the fuel and run it out of the bowl, then turn on the fuel again and see how long it takes before you can retart.
Need more info for a more accurate diagnosis of your trouble.

I just returned from Black River Falls, WI and I did not have any problems with my 03 Kodiak 450. I put 170 miles on it and it ran trouble free. Thanks to everyone who replied, your suggestions were greatly appreciated.
