What's the scoop on storage with the 05 RX-1?

The lack of storage has always been a significant negative in my books, but now the Canadian Yamaha site (and not the US one) states there is now storage under the seat.

In the "features" section of both the RX-1 and RX-1 ER it reads:

STORAGE
Leave at dawn, come back after dark. With storage underthe seat of the RX-1, you can bring everything you needfor a full day of trail domination.

I can't find any pictures, nor is there a single mention that I can find at the US site.

The Canadian site seems too have alot of mistakes. I saw an 05 and didn't see any storage compartment. The new seat is going to be a real improvement for comfort.

I wonder if they have been trying to add a storage area with the new seat, but haven't finalized it yet.

It's clearly marked as a feature for the 05 RX-1's on the Canadian site. How could they make a mistake like that if there wasn't something to it? It even says RX-1 in the same sentence (so it's not a copy and paste error).

My money is on the possibility that the web guy at y-ca *assumed* that the taller seat was to make storage space.

What I don't understand is why doesn't Yamaha add some storage to the sled? It really is a pretty major negative and shouldn't be all that hard to add.

I wouldn't complain if they added 3 or 4" above the muffler for a little storage.

There is no space on this sled to add storage. If you want storage, get saddle bags.

There's always ways to design in storage.

Even something simple like the ZR's have with the padded tunnel seat extensions. Pull up on them, the snaps pop off and inside is convenient storage for maps, etc. One thing I really like about the ZR's map storage is it keeps them flat and in good shape (unlike jamming them in the rear storage along with the spare sweater, emergency kit, rope, extra tools, duct tape, spare gloves, oil, etc.).

I'm also sure a small storage area could have been designed in above the seat hump, especially since they've added almost 2" of padding since 03.

What about a small glove box added to the hood somewhere like my 1966 Olympic.

Just add the tank bag to her and you'll have plenty of storage :!: :!:

Since I'm planning to buy a 05 regardless (would be much happier with storage though), which tank bag do you use?

I have always thought a tank bag might be in the way. How do you find it when you're working the sled hard on bumpty tight trails (leaning from side to side all the time)?

The removable factory tank bag with the 2 side pockets is the one I use, Since I've added the turbo I carry my tool kit, spare belt, maps, hat, flashlight, tums, asprin and spare gloves with room to spare :!: I don't find the bag to be in the way when riding hard but you can remove the main bag and just use the side bags for the shorter trips 8)

I found that the tank bag gets in my way because I ride with my body up near the tank. Another option is the Combination Sports Luggage (part # SMA-8FA73-20-00) for about $100 list price. It has three pockets and fits over the back of the seat. Enough room to store your stuff, and the bag stays put. Rode a 1,200 mile trip with a fully loaded bag and no problems. I did hear some folks had problems with the rivots coming out, but not me. I like the bag because you don't know it is there while riding. Just another idea.

From Yammi's perspective

Gotta think about the storage issue from Yammi's side. Hmmmm, lets see... If I dont design any storage on the sled I force my customers to buy luggage. With 50%+ margins on PG&A the manufacturer loves it!

Almost RX-1,

I personally don't like tank bags because they get in the way of my legs when I crouch forward. I have the Yamaha soft saddle bags and I think they work great.
