I just picked up a 05 vector mountain with 3000 miles. I got a good deal on it, but the primary clutch is actually broken. Is this my gut says this is too bad to use. What do you think? What are my options. I do have a comet 108 hanging out that is in good shape. Is it worth using? All three towers are broken similar to this.

You just need a new moveable shive. Don,t use the clutch like that. It might last a while but it also could go right away & cause a lot more damage.
Not worth the risk for a $100 part.

actually locally its a 238 dollar part. That plus the 270 dollar tune up kit and maybe some weights is a little rich for me. Thats why I am considering the 108. It can be re-weighted and a new spring for as low as $50.

I have seen good used 4 stroke primaries sell for $200. Looks like you blew a belt & it just caught the corner. I have seen a few go right at that point.

yeah, it does look like that is what happened. what range of years can I look for to salvage parts from? maybe I can find a used moveable sheave. I just need to figure out my options. The last yamaha clutch i bought used off ebay was "in good shape" but was completely unusable. so I am leery of that. you have not said anything about the comet clutch, has anyone ever used one on a new four stroke?

Stick with the yamaha clutch. A primary off any 4 stroke sled will work. If your using aftermarket weights then a 2 stroke primary will be fine.

can you tell me why not to use the comet? every where I have read people say don't use it, but no one can give a reason.

It,s a cheap piece of equipment. The bushings wear out very quickly. The yammie primary with proper clutching lasts allmost forever.

ok, but there is no physical reason, like improper offset? bore or taper difference? sheave angle? i know it's not a double overdrive like the yamaha, so I will lose like 7% or so of my top gear, but I am ok with that. I have owned 4 different yamaha sleds. No primary has lasted over 3000 miles. I don't know why, but it has been like that for me. I am just not enthused about sinking $700 into a repair job on a $2500 sled.
what about a p85 polaris clutch? I have access to a whole pile of those.

p85 wide roller triple clutch will work. If your clutches are failing the calibration is off causing heat & then come the issues.

triple means polaris triple....as in a 3 cylinder polaris...as in not a twin..as in not a 2 cylinder model.
